Korbinian Birnbacher OSB (born January 20, 1967 in Bad Reichenhall as Georg Birnbacher ) is a Benedictine and archabbot of the Archabbey of St. Peter in Salzburg .

Life

Georg Birnbacher grew up in Anger (Berchtesgadener Land) and entered the Salzburg Benedictine Archabbey of St. Peter in 1987, where he received the religious name of St. Korbinian from Archabbot Franz Bachler . He made his perpetual profession in 1991 and was ordained a priest on June 29, 1994 in Salzburg Cathedral by Archbishop Georg Eder . Birnbacher completed his theological and historical studies at the University of Salzburg (1988–1990) and at the Papal Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome (1990–1997). In 1997 he was awarded a thesis on religious history in RomeThe archbishops of Salzburg and monasticism at the time of the investiture dispute (1060−1164) received his doctorate .

Back in Salzburg, Father Korbinian worked in various offices in and outside the St. Peter Monastery , such as novice master , monastery archivist, university pastor , cooperator in Abtenau and custodian of the art collections. Under Archabbot Bruno Becker and Administrator Father Benedikt Röck, he was their deputy as prior of the Archabbey since 2009 .

On January 30, 2013, the electoral chapter of the convent elected the 46-year-old Benedictine as 88th abbot and 6th Archabbot of St. Peter with an initial term of twelve years. He was introduced to his office on 12 April 2013, received on 21 April 2013 by the Salzburg Archbishop Alois Kothgasser SDB in the Collegiate Church of St. Peter the Abtsbenediktion . He chose Communicantes semper tecum (“As a participant, always with you”) as the abbot's motto (cf. 1 Petr 4.13; Ps 73.23; RB 7.50). On June 29, 2013 Archabbot Korbinian was appointed Consistorial Councilor by the Archbishop of Salzburg.

Korbinian Birnbacher has also been President of the Bavarian Benedictine Academy since 2014 . Furthermore, as Archabbot of St. Peter ex officio, he is a member of the Presidium of the Salzburg Abbot Conference , as its secretary he had functioned until he was elected abbot.

Birnbacher is chairman of the Catholic University Works.

Archabbot Korbinian has been chairman of the newly founded Order Conference Austria since 2020 , which now represents all religious in Austria.
