Ulrich Faust OSB (born August 23, 1935 in Harburg-Wilhelmsburg as Jürgen Faust; † October 8, 2019 in the Marienberg Abbey , South Tyrol ) was a German Benedictine and church historian .

Life

Faust joined the order of the Benedictines. He made his novitiate in the Ottobeuren monastery and took the religious name "Ulrich". From 1956 he studied philosophy , Catholic theology , German language and history at the University of Salzburg , the Papal Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo , the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . In 1960 he was ordained a priest . With a doctoral thesis on Gottfried von Admont he was in 1965 in RomeDoctor theologiae doctorate. The doctorate to Dr. phil. via Johann Gottfried Herder followed in 1976 in Salzburg. Father Ulrich was initially a teacher at the Hechingen grammar school and at the Calw and Ottobeuren grammar schools . From 1981 he taught at the University of Salzburg. In 1983 he completed his habilitation in general church history at the University of Graz , where he worked as a lecturer until 1987. He also taught at the Hildesheim seminary .

Member of the Bavarian Benedictine Academy since 1971 , Father Ulrich worked intensively on the publication of the Germania Benedictina from 1986 to 2014 . From 1988 to 2014 he was Dean of the Historical Section of the Benedictine Academy. From 1991 to 2014 he was chief editor of studies and communications on the history of the Benedictine order and its branches . Starting in 1987, he headed the Department of History of Monasticism and Patrology at the International Research Center in Salzburg. Faust was a member of the Swabian Research Association since 2000 . In Ottobeuren he was the librarian of the famous monastery library. In 2010 he transferred his monastic profession to the Marienberg Abbey; there he was significantly involved in the construction of a new monastery library.
