Studies and communications on the history of the Benedictine order and its branches is the title of a journal published by the Bavarian Benedictine Academy . The title of the journal is officially abbreviated to SMGB (occasionally also with StMBO or StudMittOSB). It appears in the EOS publishing house of the St. Ottilien Archabbey .
Founded in 1880 in Raigern Abbey in Moravia , the SMGB was taken over in 1911 by the Archabbey of St. Peter in Salzburg and finally in 1925 by the Bavarian Benedictine Academy . By 2005, the journal had published 74 volumes as well as 43 volumes of the supplementary series. It publishes articles and monographs on the history of the order of Benedictines , Cistercians , Trappists and Camaldolians . The focus is on ( Catholic ) theology , philosophy , history and sacred art . Even if the SMGB are not geographically specialized, contributions by Bavarian or German-speaking authors predominate .
Another monographic series of the German-speaking Benedictines were the treatises and publications of the Bavarian Benedictine Academy , in which nine volumes appeared between 1936 and 1965. In 1965 the Germania Benedictina project , a historical handbook on Benedictineism in the German-speaking area, was tackled, within the framework of which twelve volumes were created by 2012.
