Remeika

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Remeika is a Lithuanian male family name . It is also used as a first name by descendants of Lithuanians in the USA. Related forms are Romeik and Rammyke .

etymology

Presumably it is a Lithuanian borrowing of a patronymic from the Old Prussian language to a nickname short form with the nickname member ram- (from Old Prussian rāms "morally, calmly") to full forms such as Queyrams (as a surname and place name - e.g. Quirme / Quermen im former Osterode district in East Prussia - occupied). The old Prussian suffix -eik denotes a diminutive . The original ending -o was weakened in the process of Germanization to -e . The name is therefore probably older than that of the Romeiken / Romeyken settlement in the former district of Ebenrode .
