Tiurida ( Ahd. 'Fame') is the fifth studio album of the Pagan / Viking Metal project Falkenbach . It was released on January 28, 2011 on the Austrian label Napalm Records .

Creation and publication

Markus “Vratyas Vrakyas” Tümmers engaged as a guest musician, as with the previous albums Ok nefna tysvar ty and Heralding - The Fireblade Patrick “Hagalaz” Damiani, Philip “Tyrann” Breuer, Michel “Boltthorn” Spithoven, who used to be part of the Luxembourgish band Le Grand Guignol and Florian played "Alboîn" Dammasch from Eïs . The songs were written almost exclusively by Tümmers, but the song Sunnavend was written together with Damiani, and Breuer wrote one of the lyrics.

The recordings and mixing took place in the TidalWave Studio in Karlsdorf until mid-September 2010 and were carried out by Patrick "Hagalaz" Damiani, who was also a guest musician on the album. The album was mastered by Robin Schmidt in the 24-96 mastering studio in Karlsruhe . The layout was designed by Florian "Alboîn" Dammasch and Markus "Vratyas Vrakyas" Tümmers in the color mood of the picture Sunrise in the Yosemite Valley by Albert Bierstadt , which can be seen in the booklet. As a bonus track, some versions of Tiurida contain the song Asaland . It is a modified and newly recorded version of the song of the same name on the 1995 demo Læknishendr .

The album was initially only released on the Argentine market via Icarus Music as a simple jewelcase version. On the European market, it appeared as digipack , box set and gatefold - record and only much later than jewel case version. The individual presentations differ as follows:

  • Limited Digipack - Digipak presentation with a black and white cover that differs from the artwork on the booklet. The version contains the regular title list including bonus titles and was released in a limited edition.
  • Strictly Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set - Contains the Limited Digipack in an additional gold-brownish box and a chain with the Falkenbach logo. The edition is 1000 copies. When pre-ordered, the edition also included a DIN A2- sized poster of the cover.
  • Vinyl - LP with gatefold -Packaging in the design of the booklet artwork. as on the two limited CD versions, the bonus title Asaland is included. 250 versions were released with white records, 150 with black and 100 with gold.
  • Jewelcase - The cover of this version is the booklet, the design of which is also used on the back cover. The bonus title Asaland is not included.

style

Musically, the album is classified by the trade press between Pagan and Viking Metal . Unlike the previous album , it is relatively calm and so reminds more of Ok nefna tysvar ty . Most of the singing is performed clearly, only in Time Between Dog and Wolf and In Flames we use guttural singing . The texts on Tiurida deal with Vikings , runes and Norse mythology and are sometimes held as songs of fame .

reception

The reactions of the trade press to the album were mixed. Tiurida is usually rated as good, but remains below the level Falkenbach is used to. Justus Ledig from the webzine metal1.info assumed that the album was indirectly the weakest of all Falkenbach albums, but noted that this was “'whining' at the highest level”. He gave the album 8.5 out of 10 points and commented: "'Tiurida' is still a bit away from a masterpiece, but remains a very successful record of independent, contemporary and groundbreaking Viking Metal."

Stefan Frühauf from dark-festivals.de also awarded 8.5 out of 10 points . He commented that Falkenbach is returning with Tiurida "in a way that is worth listening to" and that "friends of atmospheric Viking Metal anthems" would be "very well served" with the album.

Sebastian Kessler gave the album 5 out of 7 points in his review in the German Metal Hammer and concluded his conclusion with the words: “Although not all songs are on [the] hit level [like 'In Flames', which is between dreamy acoustic- Sharing and melodic Black Metal oscillates and knows how to captivate], but the bottom line is that TIURIDA remains a varied and atmospherically coherent album, to which you can just hang out and celebrate. "

A very positive review was published on metal.de , written by Markus Endres. Endres gave the album 9 out of 10 points and wrote: “Compared to the previous albums, I perceive 'Tiurida' to be a further matured work that skillfully combines all of FALKENBACH's trademarks, is extremely varied, and a little more folkloric Page. The majestic hymns on 'Tiurida' captivate with comprehensible, perfect melodies that are immediately stuck in the memory, clear, moving chants and an atmosphere that once inspired the Viking Metal albums by BATHORY . The characteristic sound of FALKENBACH was retained and implemented in a brilliant way. Great epic! "
