Læknishendr , also Laeknishendr , ( old Icelandic : 'Healing Hands') is a demo by the Viking metal band Falkenbach .

History of origin

Between 1989 and 1996 the only member of Falkenbach, Vratyas Vakyas , recorded a total of nine tapes. Since very little is known about most of them, it cannot be said how many of them are Læknishendr ; the other recordings were not intended to be passed on to persons he did not know. All of Laeknishendr's songs were already on older tapes.

In 1995 Vratyas Vakyas recorded what he said was the first official cassette Læknishendr in the Icelandic national park Þingvellir . The original release was made in an edition of 33 copies and sold to various record companies, but many of the record companies copied the cassettes without permission and sometimes even sold them. According to Vratyas Vakyas, sending the cassette to record companies was not primarily about getting a record deal, but about feedback on music and lyrics. Today an original from the demo is a sought-after rarity.

The bootleg version, which is more widespread on the Internet, is played a little too fast and is therefore 2 minutes shorter. The songs Skirnir , Læknishendr and Asaland were later re-recorded and re-released on the albums … En their medh riki fara… , Heralding - The Fireblade and Tiurida . Læknishendr appears without an intro on the promo tape released by No Colors Records in 1995 .

style

The style is far more minimalistic and darker than on the following albums and the sound is quite washed out. The vocals are more profound than on the albums and partly with a delay, clean vocals are used comparatively rarely. All drum tracks were recorded with an analog drum computer . Instead of an acoustic guitar as on the albums, Vakyas uses an electric guitar for the undistorted interludes.

The intro Skirnir begins with an epic keyboard melody, followed by a sluggish metal part. This version differs significantly from the one on the Heralding album . The title track Læknishendr starts with a clean folk-like intro, which is missing on the re-releases, with almost 8 minutes this is the longest version of this track. The distinctive folk melody is repeated in the middle and at the end.

Blonde is very sluggish and minimalist. The piece uses elements of Doom Metal and contains clear vocals, acoustic interludes and some passages in which only wind and water noises can be heard. At over 11 minutes, this is the longest song. Wuotan Imposuerunt consists of a slow e-guitar rhythm played in palm mutes , over which lies a hypnotic keyboard melody, this melody is only interrupted by a short interlude and a blastbeat part.

Infernum is a very fast paced song played in the Norwegian black metal style. The first 3 minutes mostly consist of blast beats and screeching vocals, and psychedelic keyboards can be heard in places. This is followed by an atmospheric part in which a horn sounds, followed by an epic beat. The last three minutes are identical to the first three, but do not contain any singing. The Outro Asaland begins with a clean, echoed guitar melody, which is accompanied by keyboard, drums and electric guitar at the end of the piece.

Texts

The texts by Skirnir and Læknishendr are written in Old Norse , the latter being taken from the Edda , Sigrdrífumál , verses 4 and 5. Infernum contains a text passage from the Germania des Tacitus . There warriors are described who paint their skin black. Since this song is based on Norwegian Black Metal, the text is a kind of homage to the corpse paint used in the scene there .

Reviews

Sic from Myrrthront.de called Laeknishendr “absolute class even for a demo” and compared the style to Enslaved's Frost .
