Albert Schmidt (Benedictine)

Albert Schmidt OSB (* 1948 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German Benedictine and abbot praeses of the Beuron congregation .

Life

Albert Schmidt, the son of a Benedictine Oblate , joined in 1967 the Congregation of Benedictines in Beuron in. He studied theology and philosophy and received his doctorate in Rome . He then worked in the Beuron Archabbey. He was ordained a priest in 1973. In 1992 he became a student chaplain at the St. Benedict College in Salzburg. From 1997 to 2005 he was Rector of the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome . Since 2006 he has been editor of the Benedictine magazine Erbe und Einsatz .

On April 16, 2008, Albert Schmidt was elected Abbot President of the Beuron Congregation by the 24th General Chapter in Beuron and succeeded Anno Schoenen ( Maria Laach ). The abbot's benediction by Archbishop Robert Zollitsch took place on April 19, 2008 in the abbey church. His motto is: Habitare in Unum ( Psalm 133 ).

The Beuron Congregation is an amalgamation of 18 mostly German or German-speaking male and female monasteries of the Benedictine order . The main monastery is the Beuron Archabbey in the upper Danube valley. Albert Schmidt is thus the highest-ranking dignitary of the congregation and major superior in terms of canon law.

From November 16, 2009, Albert Schmidt OSB was also the administrator of the Weingarten Benedictine Abbey , founded in 1056 and abandoned in 2010.
