Humanitarian aid in Iraq

Malteser International has been the worldwide aid organization of the Sovereign Order of Malta for humanitarian aid since 2005 and a registered association since January 1, 2013 . The non-governmental organization , based in Cologne, is active with around 100 projects annually in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia, America and Europe and has regional associations in Europe and the USA.

history

The organization emerged from the German Malteser Hilfsdienst eV and its foreign service department. The forerunner was ECOM (Emergency Corps of the Order of Malta), founded in 1992 by the Sovereign Order of Malta from the German service abroad and several other national associations of the Order of Malta. ECOM's mission was to provide assistance after natural disasters or in other crisis situations such as 1999 in Kosovo or 2003 after the earthquake in Bam (Iran). After the 2004 tsunami in South and Southeast Asia, Malteser International was founded in 2005 as the international relief organization of the Order of Malta for humanitarian aid . The tasks go beyond the area of emergency aid in the event of a disaster, because Malteser International also supports the reconstruction towards sustainable development. Malteser International's work focuses on the topics of health, water / sanitation and hygiene (WASH), nutrition and disaster risk management.
