Johann Baptist Orbin

Johann Baptist Orbin (born September 22, 1806 in Bruchsal , † April 8, 1886 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was the fourth Archbishop of Freiburg .

Life

Johann Baptist Orbin was born on September 22nd, 1806 in Bruchsal into a family of musicians. His ancestors came to the Electoral Palatinate from Sweden in the 18th century .

From 1826 Orbin studied theology at the University of Freiburg . After his first positions as vicar and parish administrator , he first came to Mannheim as a cooperator , became parish administrator there in 1839 and finally in 1843 also pastor at the Upper Parish (St. Ignatius and Franz Xaver) . In 1846 Archbishop Hermann von Vicari brought him to Freiburg as cathedral capitular and minister pastor.

After von Vicari's death, Orbin was on the proposal list for the office of bishop. Due to the church dispute in Baden , however, no choice was possible. Auxiliary Bishop Lothar von Kübel was appointed as diocese administrator , who performed this task for around 13 years until his untimely death. Only then could Orbin, now 75, be elected. On July 12, 1882, he was finally consecrated and enthroned by the Rottenburg Bishop von Hefele . During his short term in office, he campaigned for an end to the Kulturkampf .

Johann Baptist Orbin died on April 8, 1886. He was buried in the north aisle of the Freiburg Minster . In the Locherer Chapel there is a statue of Orbins, which was created by Gustav Adolf Knittel .
