Johannes Christian Roos (born April 28, 1826 in Kamp am Rhein , † October 22, 1896 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German clergyman, Roman Catholic Bishop of Limburg from 1885 to 1886 and Archbishop of Freiburg from 1886 to 1896 .

Life

Roos was born in Kamp am Rhein as one of thirteen children of a Catholic winemaking family. After attending school in Boppard , Weilburg and Hadamar, he studied theology in Munich and Bonn . During his studies he spent his holidays with the Redemptorists of the Bornhofen monastery , the first religious establishment in the Limburg diocese after secularization . He attended the seminary Limburg and received on 22 August 1853 in Limburg, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He then worked as a chaplain in Frankfurt am Main , Ransel and Oberlahnstein . In 1856 he became pastor in Hochheim . At the instigation of the socially committed pastor, the community of poor servants of Jesus Christ (colloquially: Dernbacher Sisters) settled here . You should take over care tasks in the following years.

In 1860 he was appointed secretary by Bishop Peter Josef Blum . After further activities as cathedral vicar and city chaplain as well as sub- rain and later rain of the seminary , he became the city pastor of Limburg in 1868 and thus a member of the cathedral chapter . From 1864 he was a professor of pastoral theology in Limburg. The contact established in 1856 with the community of the Dernbach Sisters - the diocese's first community foundation - continued. Their former superior and then episcopal commissioner Johann Jakob Wittayer died in 1881. Roos then became the episcopal commissioner for the sisters until he was elected bishop. He should encourage her very much in this and his later function as bishop.

On February 19, 1885, he was appointed Bishop of Limburg as successor to Peter Josef Blum and on March 27 of the same year by Pope Leo XIII. approved. The bishop of Fulda , Georg von Kopp , donated him the episcopal ordination on May 17, 1885; Co- consecrators were Daniel Wilhelm Sommerwerck , the Bishop of Hildesheim , and Michael Felix Korum , the Bishop of Trier . On June 2, 1886 he was appointed fifth Archbishop of Freiburg and on July 27 of the same year by Pope Leo XIII. approved. The inauguration took place on September 21, 1886.

In 1890 Roos was accepted as an honorary member of the KDStV Hercynia Freiburg im Breisgau . He took his bishop's chaplain Lorenz Werthmann with him to Freiburg. There Roos initiated the founding of Caritas , whose official founder is today Werthmann.
