Bishop Lothar von Kübel

Lothar Kübel , von Kübel since 1870 , (born April 22, 1823 in Sinzheim , † August 3, 1881 in St. Peter in the Black Forest ) was auxiliary bishop and archbishopric administrator in Freiburg im Breisgau .

Life

He grew up as the youngest of six children in a simple farming family. As an exceptionally gifted student, he was allowed to attend high school in Rastatt . From 1843 he studied Catholic theology in Freiburg and Munich. Archbishop Hermann von Vicari ordained him on August 17, 1847 . After a few vicar stations ( Donaueschingen , Bonndorf , Freiburg) he was appointed to the Collegium Theologicum as a tutor in December 1848. From 1854 he was responsible for school issues in the episcopal ordinariate , one of the points of contention with the grand ducal government in Karlsruhe. When the previously Grand Ducal Collegium Theologicum could be converted into an Archbishop's Konvikt , he became its director. Bucket was on 20 November 1867 Domdekan and vicar general appointed and finally on 22 March 1868 by the Mainz Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler to auxiliary bishop and titular bishop of Leuce ordained .

After the death of Archbishop of Vicari on April 14, 1868, the cathedral chapter elected him as archbishopric administrator. However, no agreement on a successor could be reached with the government in Karlsruhe. Kübel remained in this office until his death. He essentially continued the ecclesiastical line of his predecessor.

Badischer Kulturkampf

The already existing conflict with the Baden government over their ideas of a state church was further exacerbated by the idea of state church sovereignty. The disputes from 1866 to 1876 were shaped by Interior Minister Julius Jolly . By separating ecclesiastical and state affairs, he anticipated the Prussian Kulturkampf with the Baden Kulturkampf . The main concern was the ousting of the church from elementary school , the introduction of the compulsory state examination for theology students and the certification of birth, marriage and death by the registry offices instead of the church. On February 1, 1870, despite Kübel's intervention, civil marriage was made mandatory. In addition, the state did everything in its power to withdraw the church foundations in the social and charitable area and nursing the sick from the church and to allow only those with exclusively religious purposes to apply.

Through pastoral letters, Kübel tried to win over the Baden Catholics for his view of things. When the liberal-minded Catholic Mayor Michael Stromeyer of Konstanz, who was the first to enforce the amalgamation of denominationally separated elementary schools in a Baden community, did not obey the orders of the church authorities on the foundation issue despite repeated warnings, the Freiburg Curia excommunicated him. During the subsequent trial, Kübel was convicted of abuse of ministry. The Foundation Act was published on May 5, 1870 and caused the Catholic Church considerable material losses. From 1874 to 1889 the theologian convict in Freiburg was also closed.

After the First Vatican Council , in which Kübel did not take part due to the difficult ecclesiastical political situation, the disputes with the Baden government intensified again because of the Baden Old Catholics Act , according to which the Old Catholic communities transfer the use of places of worship, the possession of benefices and the church property has been. In 1873 and 1874 the Catholic parishes lost a number of churches and chapels with part of the benefices to the Old Catholics favored by the Grand Ducal government .

Otherwise von Kübel used the tactic of passive resistance. As a result, up to 400 priestly posts remained vacant. In view of this unbearable pastoral emergency and because of concerns about possible socio-political instability in the Grand Duchy, the government sought an understanding with the diocesan administrator from 1878 onwards . The subsequent negotiations dragged on for a long time and in no way restored the former church political status. Nonetheless, the law of March 5, 1880 resulted in a partial dismantling of the Baden cultural struggle legislation and, in particular, a compromise on the issue of clergy education. This made it possible to fill the vacant spiritual positions again.

While Kübel was also prosecuted in the Grand Duchy of Baden, he was otherwise very much appreciated. After he had ordained the Tübingen council and church historian Karl Joseph von Hefele as Bishop of Rottenburg on December 29, 1869 , he was raised to the personal nobility status with the award of the commentary cross of the Order of the Württemberg Crown by King Karl von Württemberg in 1870 . In the Kulturkampf he could do little for the internal structure of the archdiocese because he lacked religious and younger priests. He tried to compensate for this with numerous company trips to the 836 parishes. They served him to strengthen the cohesion of the faithful among one another and to counteract the anti-church spirit and the increasing de-Christianization of life.

In mid-June 1881, Kübel suffered a minor stroke from which he did not recover. At the beginning of August 1881 he died in St. Peter, where he had retired to relax. He found his final resting place in Freiburg Minster , where a memorial was erected in 1888 by Joseph Franz Baumeister .
