Wolfgang Kirchgässner

Wolfgang Kirchgässner (born June 1, 1928 in Mannheim ; † March 26, 2014 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was auxiliary bishop in Freiburg .

Life

Wolfgang Kirchgässner, son of the post office clerk Eugen Kirchgässner from Mannheim, studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Collegium Borromaeum . He was ordained a priest on May 30, 1954 . After his vicariate in Lörrach and Karlsruhe , he became the personal secretary of Archbishop Hermann Schäufele in 1963 . In 1963 he switched to pastoral care and was pastor in Laufenburg , from 1969 dean of the dean's office in Bad Säckingen . In 1974 he took over the management of pastoral planning in the Archbishop's Office in Freiburg. He was particularly committed to restructuring the archdiocese, which had become necessary due to the administrative reform . In 1977 he moved to the pastor's position at the Stephansmünster in Breisach and was also dean of the Breisach-Endingen dean's office.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Druas and auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Freiburg im Breisgau on November 29, 1979 . On 10 February 1980 Archbishop he donated Oskar Saier the episcopal ordination ; Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Freiburg im Breisgau, Karl Gnädinger , and auxiliary bishop Anton Herre from Rottenburg-Stuttgart. His motto was “Made for the people” .

As episcopal vicar, he was responsible for the religious system. He was also the chairman of the Caritas Association for the Archdiocese of Freiburg. In 1981 he became provost of the Freiburg cathedral chapter .

On December 31, 1998, his request for retirement was granted by Pope John Paul II. He last lived in the mother house of St. Lioba of the Benedictine nuns in Günterstal and was the chaplain of the monastery.

The exsequies in Freiburg Minster and the subsequent burial in the bishop's crypt took place on April 3, 2014.
