Peter Birkhofer (born June 11, 1964 in Immenstaad on Lake Constance ) is a German clergyman and Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in Freiburg .

Life

Peter Birkhofer studied philosophy and catholic theology at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and in Rome . In 1989 Birkhofer was ordained a deacon in the seminary in St. Peter . On May 11, 1991 , he received the sacrament of ordination from the Archbishop of Freiburg, Oskar Saier , in Constance Minster .

Then Birkhofer was parish vicar in the parishes of St. Bernhard in Karlsruhe and St. Jakob in Hechingen , before he was released for doctoral studies. During this time he was also active as a pastor in the Freiburg parishes of St. Johann and St. Cyriak and Perpetua . 2003 Peter Birkhofer at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg with the thesis "Ars moriendi - Art of Serenity" in the subject dogma to Dr. theol. PhD .

From 2002 to 2005 Birkhofer held a teaching position for spirituality at the Catholic University of Freiburg . On June 18, 2016, on the occasion of the general assembly of the German Association of the Sovereign Order of Knights of Malta , Birkhofer was appointed in a pontifical office for the solemnity of St. John the Baptist in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Constance by the Association Chaplain, the Berlin Auxiliary Bishop Matthias Heinrich , and the President of the Order of Malta in Germany, Erich Prinz von Lobkowicz , accepted as Magistralkaplan (MagCap) in the Order of Malta.

On 19 February 2018 Pope appointed him Francis to the titular of Villa Magna in Tripolitania and auxiliary bishop in Freiburg. The Archbishop of Freiburg, Stephan Burger , donated him the episcopal ordination on April 15th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the emeritus apostolic nuncio in Belgium and Luxembourg , Karl-Josef Cardinal Rauber , and the prefect of the papal house , Archbishop Georg Gänswein . A day later, Birkhofer was appointed Provost of the Cathedral by Archbishop Burger . He was also appointed Episcopal Vicar for the areas for which he was responsible as head of the Universal Church and Ecumenical / Religious Dialogue Department in the Archbishop's Ordinariate before his appointment as Bishop .
