The stately chapel of the Assumption of Mary is located in the Girsterklause district of the Luxembourg municipality of Rosport-Mompach, west of the Sauer valley, which forms the border with Germany. The church , consecrated to the Assumption of Mary , was built in the Romanesque style and dates from the 11th or 12th century. It is the oldest pilgrimage site in Luxembourg. The pilgrimage leads to the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Hieselterheck (Madonna from the Haselstaude), a wooden figure of Our Lady from the 13th century.

Founding legend and history

The Legend of the Chapel of the was crusaders Elbert of Clervaux (Luxembourg) built, has come after heavy blows of fate back home happy. The Romanesque chapel was first mentioned in 1329, but is older. Coins that were found during excavations during the renovation at the end of the 1970s testify to a pilgrimage since the beginning of the 14th century. In 1431 a brotherhood in honor of the Lady of the Girsterklaus is mentioned. From the end of the 18th century until 1938, Klausner was witnessed next to the chapel. Although the patronage changed several times in the Middle Ages, the area around Gyrst can be attributed to the area of influence of the Trier Benedictine Abbey of St. Marien Monastery . During the renovations in 1978 and 2000, some later modifications were reversed and, in particular, the level of the floor was brought back to the lower original level in order to restore the original, monumental spatial impression.

Building

12 apostle frescoes in the crossing

The lower floor of the west tower forms the oldest part of the entire complex. Perhaps built on late Roman foundations, it was a defense and watchtower that was integrated into the newly built church in the late 11th or early 12th century. The nave is the oldest part of the church. Your choir yoke is still present in today's crossing . On the dome-like vault of the crossing there are Romanesque and at times painted over frescoes of the 12 apostles. The church originally had a flat roof. The rib and groin vaults in the nave, choir and tower were drawn in in the late Middle Ages. It was later removed from the side aisles. In the 18th century, the transepts were added, the windows enlarged and the choir room closed off with a polygon. This part was used as a sacristy in the 19th century and separated from the choir by a wall.

Image of grace and pilgrimage

The miraculous image of Our Lady of the Hieselter Heck comes from the transition period between late Romanesque and early Gothic . The statue of the seated Mother of God with child is inspired by the type of enthroned images of Mary from the 12th century, such as the fresco cycle in the Echternach crypt .

The pilgrimage to Girsterklaus in Rosport is one of the oldest places of pilgrimage Luxembourg. In addition to Mary, Saint Joseph is particularly venerated on the hill above Rosport . The highlight of the year is the Sunday after the Assumption of Mary and the week of Our Lady around August 15th. Furthermore, the feasts of St. Joseph (March 19), Luke (October 18), and the octave of Our Lady from Luxembourg are celebrated from the third to the fifth Sunday after Easter.

Furnishing

With a few exceptions , the furnishings of the church originated from the early baroque period , the first half of the 17th century. It essentially consists of three sandstone altars , the pulpit , figures of saints on the outer walls of the nave and the modern organ in the vestibule. The high altar was created in 1632 and frames the pilgrimage figure. This sits in a niche between Corinthian capital columns and is crowned by a representation of the Annunciation. The left side altar shows figures of a coronation of Mary by the Holy Trinity . The right side altar shows a figure of the Evangelist Luke .

The pulpit is in the crossing on the right in front of the triumphal arch . It is dated 1630 and signed by the sculptor AD. The coat of arms of the priest Joducus Elens that Jesus monogram IHS and the Marieninitialien are of late Renaissance - strip mill surrounded. The organ from 1986 with 498 pipes was built by the Lëntgener manufactory.

The Renaissance altars from the workshop of the Trier sculptor Hans Ruprecht Hoffmann , acquired at the beginning of the 17th century, are now in the chapel in neighboring Dickweiler .
