Shaft cross
A stem cross is due to its design, a specific design of a high cross . The actual bar cross or crucifix, usually made of ( sand ) stone, occasionally also in wood or even more rarely in metal , stands over a shaft (or pillar or column ) usually made of stone , which was erected on a foundation or base . It thus differs from a simple bar cross, a wayside shrine , articulated cross or niche cross - but with a niche in the cross stem it can have an element of these cross shapes. It is therefore an extended and usually higher form of a simple stone cross . Shaft crosses are often used as crossroads or floor crosses or occasionally on churches or in cemeteries in predominantly Catholic regions such as. B. to be found in the Rhineland .
