Agave kerchovei is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Century Plant".

description

Agave kerchovei forms a short trunk and grows singly or sprouts. The rosettes are formed from the lower leaf axils. The variable, lanceolate, thick, stiff, green to yellow-colored leaves are 40 to 125 cm long and 5 to 12 cm wide. The upper and lower sides of the leaf are shaped differently. The horny leaf margins are toothed flexibly. The strong brown to gray terminal thorn is 3 to 6 cm long.

The annual inflorescence is 2.5 to 5 m high. The green to purple flowers appear densely in the upper part and are 38 to 46 mm long. The openly spreading flower tube is 4 to 6 mm long.

The elongated three-chamber capsule fruits are 25 to 35 mm long and 10 to 12 mm wide. The irregularly shaped, black, shiny seeds are 3.5 to 4 mm long and 2.5 to 3 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from July to September.

Systematics and distribution

Agave kerchovei grows in Mexico in Puebla , Oaxaca and Hidalgo in mountainous regions on stony slopes, in grass and woodlands at altitudes of 1400 to 1900 m. It is associated with succulents and cactus species.

The first description by Charles Lemaire was published in 1864. Synonyms are Agave convallis Trel. , Agave dissimulans Trel. and Agave expatriata Rose .

Agave kerchovei is a robust member of the Marginatae group . Characteristic are the long, lanceolate leaves with strong, large, variably arranged peripheral teeth. It is closely related to Agave ghiesbreghtii .
