Agave ghiesbreghtii is a plant from the genus of the Agave ( agave ). An English common name is "Montecito Agave".

description

Agave ghiesbreghtii forms offshoots and sprouts abundantly. The variable, broadly lanceolate to ovate, thick, stiff, runny, dark to light green leaves are 30 to 40 cm long and 7 to 10 cm wide. The horny leaf margins are toothed flexibly. The brown to gray terminal thorn is 2 to 4 cm long.

The annual, densely flowered inflorescence is 3 to 4 m high. The green to brown colored flowers are 40 to 50 mm long. The wide funnel-shaped flower tube is 3 to 5 mm long.

The flowering period extends from March to May.

Systematics and distribution

Agave ghiesbreghtii grows in Mexico in Puebla , Oaxaca , Guerrero , Chiapas and in Guatemala on stony slopes, in grass and woodlands up to 2200 m altitude. It is associated with succulent and cactus species.

The first description by Lemaire ex Jacobi was published in 1864. Synonyms are Agave roezliana ( Baker ), Agave purpusorum ( Berger ), Agave huehueteca ( Standley & Steyermark ).

Agave ghiesbreghtii is a member of the Marginatae group . The short, broad leaves are typical. The narrow, horny leaf margins are serrated. It is closely related to agave kerchovei .
