geography

location

Hillgroven is a scattered settlement and is - surrounded by so-called sleeping dikes - on the North Sea coast near the mouth of the Eider and the Eider Barrage in the Dithmarscher Marsch .

After a flood in 1825, two Wehlen were created on the dike: Solten Wehl and de Brök .

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are the communities Wesselburenerkoog in the west and north, Norddeich in the east and Hellschen-Heringsand-Unterschaar in the south.

history

Place name and development of the community

The place name "Hillgroven" is made up of Groven or Groben , which means the vegetation on the foreland (Old Frisian: groien , English: to grow = to grow; also related to green ). The meaning of the prefix is unclear, presumably it is based on the English the hill , especially if one considers the field name "Twischen den Bargen". Natural elevations on the foreland (or old sausages ) may have given rise to the name.

In 1601 Hillgroven was diked.

In 1846 Hillgroven achieved the status of an independent municipality for the first time. Before that, the village belonged to Norddeich .

On the basis of an ordinance for the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein of September 22, 1867, Hillgroven was incorporated into the parish of Wesselburen . After the dissolution of the parish land community of Wesselburen on April 1, 1934 Hillgroven was again an independent rural community .

In 1908 Hillgroven was connected to the telephone network and from around 1920 to the public electricity network.

The machine ring was founded in Hillgroven in 1963 .

Around 1965, the independent Hillgroven fire brigade was dissolved.

In 1990 the first wind turbine went into operation in the village.

Population development

In 1855 Hillgroven had 100 inhabitants, in 1925 the number increased to 182.

On December 31, 2013, only 73 residents were counted.

politics

The Hillgroven Voting Association (WGHi) was founded on January 23, 1966 and has since taken all seven municipal council seats after each local election. After Manfred Schlüter (from 2013), Karl Henning Hinz was elected mayor in 2018.

Economy and Infrastructure

Hillgroven is an agricultural village. Cabbage, cereals and vegetables are grown. There is a machine cooperative, a sheep farm and an area that has been designated for wind energy use. The last inn in the village closed in 1940.

Public facilities

Hillgroven has been connected to the public water supply since 1964. Before that, water was supplied by cisterns and wells and by a water truck that came from time to time. The Brök had also served as a water reservoir.

In 1972 the Dithmarschen dyke and sewer association built the Hillgroven sewerage structure to drain the municipal areas.

education

Around 1800 the first thatched school was built in Hillgroven. Before that, the Hillgroven children attended school in Norddeich. In 1851 a new school - again thatched - was built in Hillgroven. This burned down in 1889. In 1890 a new school building with a slate roof was built. This one-class school was closed in 1967. Since then, the Hillgroven children have attended schools in Wesselburen, Heide and elsewhere.
