geography

March and Geest in Sankt Michaelisdonn

Due to the transition from marsh to Geest , the landscape is comparatively varied. Tourism advertising is aimed primarily at cyclists and hikers.

history

In 1878 the place received a railway connection with the construction of the march railway. In 1880 the station became a hub station by expanding the branch line initially to Marne and later to Friedrichskoog. When the Kiel Canal was widened in 1920 , a branch line to Brunsbüttel Nord was created from the march line to Sankt Michaelisdonn and the march line was newly connected to the station via the Geest and Hochdonn high bridge .

On April 1, 1934, the parish of Marne was dissolved. All of their village communities, village communities and farmers became independent communities / rural communities, including Sankt Michaelisdonn.

On October 1, 1935, the communities Hindorf, Hopen and Westdorf, which until 1934 belonged to the parish district of Süderhastedt , were incorporated.

Until the local reform in 1970, the place was an unofficial community and is located exactly at the transition between Marsch and Geest . It is named after the church built in 1611, which is located on a dune (Donn) .

politics

Community representation

Since the local elections in 2018, of the 19 seats in the municipal council, the CDU has nine, the SPD four, the voter community FW-SM and the voter community ABB each have three seats.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on November 26, 1964.

Blazon : “In blue a bareheaded, bearded man (St. Michael) with blond hair in golden peasant clothes, who pushes a lance with a golden shaft and a silver scythe blade into the neck and above a red-armored dragon lying on his back is accompanied on the right by four golden windmill blades placed in the cross. "

The coat of arms of the place shows the eponymous saint, in unusual clothing and armament, as if he were a member of the rural population of Dithmarschens in the past. The church, consecrated to St. Michael , was built in 1610 and 1611 from the proceeds of a collection. As early as 1612, the place was referred to as “Niekerken upe Dunne” or “Karcke upm Dunnen” in the documents, considering its location on the Donn , the Dithmarscher inland spit. In the course of time the church name was transferred to the Donnsiedlung: Sankt Michaelisdonn. The motif of the coat of arms goes back to the old church seal, which shows St. Michael fighting the hell dragon. The windmill blades represent the mill on site, which is a well-known landmark of the community.

The coat of arms was designed by the Brunsbüttel heraldist Willy "Horsa" Lippert .

flag

The flag was approved on December 6, 1991.

In the blue leech the figures of the municipal coat of arms in flag-appropriate tinging . The flying end is divided into nine horizontal, alternating blue and yellow stripes.

In Sankt Michaelisdonn there has been a train station on the railway line from Hamburg to Westerland on Sylt ( Marschbahn ) since 1878 . The RB 62 operates hourly to Itzehoe (via Burg (Dithm) and Wilster ) or Heide (Holst) (via Meldorf ), from where there is a connection to regional express trains to Hamburg, Westerland or ICs to Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Dresden or Karlsruhe.

The Holstein Marschbahngesellschaft built a branch line from Sankt Michaelisdonn via Marne to Friedrichskoog in 1880 . Since 2005 it is possible to track cars drive the remaining eight kilometers up to Marne.

The Sankt Michaelisdonn train station originally had seven tracks. Track 7 is used for traffic in the direction of Westerland and Heide; all trains in the direction of Hamburg and Itzehoe run on track 6. Track 5 is now used exclusively for goods traffic to and from Brunsbüttel after the scheduled passenger traffic there was discontinued on May 27, 1988. All other tracks have been closed and some of them also dismantled. The two signal boxes on Poststrasse and Burger Strasse have been closed since mid-2011 when the line was renovated. Today there is a solar park on the former site of the sugar factory, the siding has also been closed and partially dismantled.

The ZOB of Sankt Michaelisdonn is located on the station forecourt . From here there is a bus connection to Brunsbüttel , Meldorf , Marne and Barlt with the lines 2507, 2509, 2571 and 2572 (Dithmarschenbus / Autokraft ) , mostly in school traffic .

leisure

From Sankt Michaelisdonn an approximately 8 km long, disused railway line leads to Marne , which today can be ridden with a bicycle draisine .

There is a golf course 2 km southeast of the town center. Next to it is the airfield of the Dithmarscher Luftsportverein , the Sankt Michaelisdonn airfield . Colloquially it is called "Hopen" (following the nearby district).
