The Hochdonn railway bridge is located in Schleswig-Holstein . On it the march railway crosses the Kiel Canal . The high bridge was built from 1913 to 1920 as a replacement for a swing bridge , which is about 12 km further south-west (coordinates: 53 ° 55 ′ 32.2 ″  N , 9 ° 12 ′ 4.4 ″  E ) on the old route of the Marschbahn at Taterpfahl crossed the canal.

Data

As with all high bridges on the canal, the clear passage height for ships is 42 m. The greatest height is 56.38 m. The railway bridge near Hochdonn is the lowest of the canal bridges of the Kiel Canal in the peripheral areas; most of its access points are on the higher Geest .

The steel truss bridge has a total length of 2,218 m, making it the fourth longest railway bridge in Germany . At the largest bridge opening over the canal, it has a center distance of the two pillars on the canal side, the Eilersböcken , of 143.1 m. The bridge element over the canal is called the floating beam . The suspension beam has a length of 121.03 m. The steel weight of the entire construction is 14,745 t. The suspension carrier replaced in November 2006 weighs 1,275 t. The bridge was completely renovated by April 2008. Since autumn 2008, it has been open to two tracks again.

The bridge was designed by the then head of the bridge construction office of the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal , the civil engineer Friedrich Voss . He was also responsible for the construction of the Prince Heinrich Bridge in Kiel-Holtenau (demolished in 1992) and the Rendsburg railway bridge .

Fecal contamination

From 1992, the Hochdonner Brücke gained national fame through the “faecal trial”, in which the Schleswig Higher Regional Court finally approved the lawsuit of a house owner in 1995 , who demanded an end to the faeces emissions from the then still open outhouses of the railway wagons, which were regularly on the high bridge Property descended. The railway was sentenced to only use trains with closed toilet systems on the high bridge within five years . After this was not completely possible up to the year 2000, travelers were temporarily banned from using the toilet on the bridge by announcement.

Trivia
