map

Hedwigenkoog is a municipality in the Dithmarschen district in Schleswig-Holstein .

geography

Geographical location

The Koog was diked in 1696 and lies directly on the North Sea . Originally it was primarily intended to protect the former land connection between Wesselburen and Büsum .

Community structure

According to the list of places to live in the 1987 census , the municipality is not divided into places. Nevertheless, individual districts can be distinguished:

  • Hedwigenkoog (municipality capital)
  • Shepherd's stable (Westerkoog, on the coast)
  • Majorshof (Einödhof in the south of the municipality, near Westerdeichstrich )
  • Purnurr
  • According to the Schleswig-Holstein National Park Office, the Blauort and Tertius high sands also belong to the Hedwigenkoog municipality. The state government of Schleswig-Holstein is said to have not yet officially confirmed and codified this thesis of the National Park Office.

Neighboring communities

Neighboring communities are the communities Hellschen-Heringsand-Unterschaar , Reinsbüttel and Westerdeichstrich, starting clockwise in the north .

history

With the granting of its own right ( Octroi ) by Duke Friedrich IV of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf , the new Koog received its own seal. Upon completion, the Koog was named after the Duke's wife, Hedwig Sophie .

politics

Community representation

Of the nine seats in the municipal council, the UBH community of voters has five seats since the 2013 local elections and the WGH four.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In red on a green hill, a battle-ready, black armored silver swan, holding a gold-crowned silver eel in its beak."

The seal of Duke Friedrich IV originally probably showed a stork with a snake in its beak. This picture motif is known from the emblematic and expresses the warning that reason (stork) should keep passions (snake) in check. Over time, however, the stork became a swan and the snake became an eel. The proud nature of the Koogse-natives, who had become ready for conflict through the incessant struggle with the force of nature of the sea, could have brought about this change from the heraldic animal to a combative one. The moral meaning of the emblem was lost.

Economy and tourism

Landscape near Westerkoog

The community is characterized by agriculture and wind turbines . Ten plants were built in 1993. With an output of 2.25 MW, it was the largest wind farm in Germany at the time. Four more plants were built in 1994. All of them were replaced by six new Enercon systems, three REPower systems and two more in 2010 repowering . Some of the old systems came to Poland after they were dismantled. The systems each have a hub height of around 100 meters and a total height of around 130 meters.

In recent years, the municipality has increasingly focused on tourism, especially holidays on the farm. There is a bathing area and a Boßel stretch in the municipality .
