The Neuerburg Castle is a castle or fortress in the western Eifel in the Enzbachtal above the town of Neuerburg in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . After the restoration started in 1926, it is used as a youth castle.

history

The first documented mention of the Hangburg took place in 1132, when a Theodoric zu Neuerburg attested a deed of donation. The castle was already older at that time, since in 1270 the Count of Vianden described the castle and lordship of Neuerburg as an old fiefdom of his house, which he himself received from the Count of Luxembourg .

An older document from the second Norman incursion in 892 mentions a newly built castle to which the Prüm monks fled. However, there are several castles in the Eifel region that can be considered.

The importance of the castle gave the place at its feet city rights in 1332. In the same year Friedrich III., The last lord of Neuerburg, died. In the following years the rulership changed hands several times.

Significant expansion measures in the direction of the fortress were then carried out between 1513 and 1540 by Dietrich IV, Count von Manderscheid-Blankenheim , Herr von Schleiden, Daun, Neuenstein, Kronenburg and Neuerburg etc. This line of rulers kept the castle and rule until it was dissolved by the French revolutionary troops in 1794. As part of the expansion measures, the bastions intended for artillery were built. The transition between round bastions (south-west bastion) and polygonal bastions (north bastion), which took place during this construction phase, is particularly remarkable . The wall thicknesses were multiplied in the course of this construction work until they finally reached about 5.5 meters. This process is unusual for such an old castle, as it was now developed like a fortress. Nevertheless, a residential wing was also added.

Its importance as a fortress should be emphasized especially during the Thirty Years War from 1618 to 1648, because it was first repaired and ammunitioned and then it was ready to defend against Swedish, Dutch, Irish, Polish and French troops. The Luxembourg troops billeted for defense behaved so badly that you had to defend yourself against them. However, the castle prevented the same troops from looting .

In the following years there was always war ( Palatine War of Succession , Dutch War ), so that the castle was further expanded and fortified , but also shot at. 1692 was a crucial year because the fortifications were blown up by the French. Some of the facilities were rebuilt in 1701, but no longer in their old splendor. The final end came with the Revolutionary Wars when the castle was auctioned. The stones were sold after the great fire of 1818 and were used elsewhere.

The castle then came under municipal ownership and was a poor house , archive and prison until the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1926 the Bund New Germany acquired the castle under a long lease and had it partially rebuilt. As a result of the numerous renovations, a mezzanine was created between the ground floor and first floor, which often served as a hiding place and refuge. You can still enter these rooms through hidden entrances.

Todays use

The castle is now operated by the Bund New Germany, based in Cologne, as a youth castle and youth hostel and administered by the Krump family. The inner courtyard, the chapel and the ruins are freely accessible to the public.
