history

A three-aisled Romanesque church was built in Wintersdorf around 1100 . The bell tower and two attached side choirs have been preserved . The main choir was located in the basement of the bell tower (originally a choir tower ) . In the 17th century a new nave was built, but without aisles. At the end of the 19th century this hall church became dilapidated and it was decided to build a new parish church.

In 1901 the old nave was torn down and between 1901 and 1902 a new nave was built in the neo-Romanesque style according to plans by the architects Reinhold Wirtz and Wilhelm Schmitz . It was adapted to the architectural style of the Romanesque church tower.

Building description

St. James the Elder is a three-aisled, five-bay, flat-roofed basilica in the neo-Romanesque style. A three-storey Romanesque bell tower with two side chapels is built in front of the nave to the east. In the west the central nave closes with a semicircular apse .

Furnishing

The furnishings include the neo-Romanesque high altar with depictions of the four evangelists , James the Elder and St. Antonius Abbas , the two neo-Romanesque side altars, the windows from the 1950s and the old baroque high altar in the former choir in the bell tower.
