Wilhelm Peter Schmitz (born January 20, 1864 in Lüttelforst , today municipality of Schwalmtal (Niederrhein) , district of Viersen ; † June 4, 1944 ) was a German architect , construction officer and monument conservator who worked as a cathedral builder in Metz and Trier .

Life

He completed his training and internship between 1877 and 1887 with the architects Hürth, Julius Busch and Heinrich Wiethase . A second assistantship followed from 1890 at Georg Frentzen , during which he worked at the reception building of Cologne Central Station . In the diocese of Metz , Schmitz had the opportunity from 1890 to work as assistant to the local cathedral builder Paul Tornow in the restoration of the cathedral of Metz and to deepen his knowledge.

On June 8, 1898, he succeeded Reinhold Wirtz . Schmitz was a cathedral builder in Trier and from 1906 also in Metz. From 1898 to 1911 Schmitz was a partner in the architectural office of Julius Wirtz (1875–1952) to support the deceased's son. With him he carried out numerous sacred buildings as well as commercial and residential buildings. The focus of his work between 1898 and 1911 was restoring and refurbishing Trier Cathedral.

Due to Tornow's successor in Metz, his contractual relationship was dissolved on August 1, 1908 by the Vicariate General in Trier. Schmitz then worked in Metz as a cathedral builder and Lorraine conservator until 1919. In this phase the restoration of the interior of the cathedral takes place. He then moved to Cologne, where he worked as a Prussian construction officer in the Reich Office for the removal of war damage.

Stephan Mattar was one of his well-known students .
