Pupilla sterrii
( by Voith in Forster , 1840)

The striped pupa snail ( Pupilla sterrii ) is a type of snail from the family of the pupa snail , which belongs to the subordination of the land snail (Stylommatophora).

features

The cylindrical housing is 2.8 to 3.5 mm high (up to 3.7 mm high) and 1.5 to 1.7 mm wide. It has six to seven strongly curved turns on the periphery, which are separated from one another by a deep seam. The apex is rounded and low. The light neck bulge is strongly developed. It is separated from the thin, greatly enlarged mouth rim by a channel-like constriction. The mouth is oblique-egg-shaped, the edge of the mouth curved outwards. The mouth is reinforced with two teeth, a palatal tooth and a parietal tooth. The parietal tooth is usually small, the palatal tooth, on the other hand, is thickened and easy to see when looking at the mouth vertically. see. The surface is covered with comparatively coarse strips of growth. The housing is reddish-brown to horn-colored. The surface looks silky and shiny thanks to the growth strips.

Similar species

The casing is more coarsely striped than the other European pupilla species. Compared to the moss pupa snail ( Pupilla muscorum ) the shell is more cylindrical, the mouth is slightly smaller. The similar housing of the three-toothed doll snail is smaller in terms of absolute dimensions and usually somewhat narrower in proportion. There are usually three teeth in the mouth. The palatal tooth is a little rounder in the striped doll snail and stands closer to the edge of the mouth.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The occurrence of the striped pupa snail is very dispersed. It occurs in the Alps, the Carpathians, Bulgaria, Albania, Ukraine, Turkey, the northern Caucasus, and northwest China. In Germany it was found in the Franconian Jura and in Thuringia.

The striped pupa snail lives mostly montane on grassy, sun-exposed, rocky, very dry and warm locations on calcareous subsoil. She stays there at the foot of free-standing rocks in the mulch or under dead plant parts. In the Alps, it rises to 2800 m above sea level.

Way of life

The animals are ovoviviparous , i.e. H. the eggs gradually develop in the uterus. There are usually several (up to about five) embryos of different degrees in the uterus. The young leave the uterus as finished little animals.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1840 by Ignaz von Voith in a work by Fortunatus Forster as Pupa Sterrii . It is now generally recognized and placed in the genus Pupilla .

Synonyms are: Pupa aridula Held, 1843, Pupa striatissa, Gredler, 1856, Pupilla cupa f. carpathica Kimakowicz, 1890 and Pupa cupa Jan, 1932 (sensu Geyer, 1927).

Danger

The species is endangered in Germany.

annotation

  1. Welter-Schultes lists Fortunatus Forster as the author. This is not correct. "If a work is by more than one person but it is clear from the contents that only one of these is responsible for the name or act, then that person is the author; otherwise the author of the work is deemed to be the author of the name or act. "( IRZN Art. 50.1.). This is the case here: “This new species was discovered alive by the theologian Sterr near Abach, by Mr. Director v. Voith named in his honor and described in the following way: ... “A second description before this comment is also signed P. Sterrii de Voith. There is also no indication in the work that Fortunatus Forster had claimed the new name for himself or assumed responsibility for the new scientific name and description. The author of the taxon is Ignaz von Voith.
