Superfamily : Pupilloidea
Family : Doll snails
Scientific name
Pupillidae
Turton , 1831

The pupae snails (Pupillidae) are a family of snails from the suborder of the land snails (Stylommatophora). All species are relatively small. Five or six species are found in Europe.

features

The right-hand wound housings are relatively small, oval or cylindrical. They measure around 2.5 to 5 mm. The navel is very tight. The edge of the mouth is often thickened or bent over. The mouth can have up to about seven teeth in some species. The penis and epiphallus are present in the hermaphroditic genital apparatus. The penis is smooth internally or with weak longitudinal folds. A blind sac ( caecum ) sits near the base of the epiphallus and a penile appendix is also formed. The prostate has few acini and sits at the lower end of the albumin gland. There is originally a diverticulum on the stem of the spermathec , but this shows a tendency to reduce. Many species reproduce ovoviviparously .

Geographical distribution, occurrence and way of life

Most species live relatively hidden under litter, leaves or in moss. The distribution of the family is worldwide (with the exception of Antarctica). The distribution area extends from the northern hemisphere to the polar regions.

Systematics

According to Bouchet & Rocroi (2005), the pupil snail family (Pupillidae) is one of 13 families in the superfamily Pupilloidea . Schileyko (1998), on the other hand, places them in a monotypical superfamily Pupilloidea. Schileyko (1998) also divides the family into two subfamilies: Pupillinae Turton, 1831 and Pupoidinae Iredale, 1940, which Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) treat as synonyms.
