JE Gray (1840) |
Heterobranchia is the scientific name for the snail parentage of the different gills . This superordinate group is a central taxon in the system of snails (gastropods), which includes not only very many, but also very different species of marine, freshwater and land snails. Known since JE Gray (1840), the heterobranchia appear in an adapted form in modern taxonomies of snails, most recently as a superordinate order in Ponder & Lindberg (1997) and as a clade in the current taxonomy of Bouchet & Rocroi (2005).
Systematics
Systematics by Ponder & Lindberg (1997)
In the system of Ponder & Lindberg (1997) , the heterobranchia appear as a superordinate order . Inside there is a dichotomy:
-
Class Gastropoda (snails), G. Cuvier, 1797
- Subclass Orthogastropoda (real snails)
-
Subclass Apogastropoda , L. Salvini-Plawen & G. Haszprunar, 1987
- Superorder Caenogastropoda , Cox, 1960
-
Superorder Heterobranchia (Diverse-Kiemer), JE Gray, 1840
- Order Heterostropha (different-Dreher), PH Fischer, 1885
- Order Opisthobranchia (hind gill snails), H. Milne Edwards, 1848
- Order Pulmonata (lung snails), G. Cuvier in HMD de Blainville, 1814
Systematics by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005)
In the system of Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) the heterobranchia appear externally as a cladus . Inside there is a three-way division:
-
Great gastropoda
- Clade , extinct Paleozoic molluscs with unsecured assignment
- Clade , extinct basal taxa with a reliable assignment to snails
- Klade Patellogastropoda (Limpets)
- Klade Vetigastropoda
- Klade Cocculiniformia
- Clade Neritimorpha
- Klade Caenogastropoda
-
Clade Heterobranchia (Various-Kiemer)
- informal group of lower heterobranchia
- informal group Opisthobranchia (Hinterkiemer)
- informal group pulmonata (lung snails)
