The Vetigastropoda are a parent of the subclass Orthogastropoda within the snails . Well-known groups of the Vetigastropoda are the slit band snails (Pleurotomariidae) and the abalones (Haliotidae).

definition

Ponder and Lindberg (1997) list six apomorphic features of the Vetigastropoda that constitute the group's monophyly:

  • epipodial sense organs
  • papillate tentacles
  • Digestive glands
  • Location of the kidneys
  • several statoconia (parts of the organs of equilibrium)
  • Presence of special gill sacs (bursicles)

Systematics

The extent or the number of superfamilies within the Vetigastropoda is not yet fully established. Bouchet and Rocroi list 12 superfamilies and three families that they could not assign to any of the superfamilies.

the following superfamily is put by some authors as an order or subordination to the Orthogastropoda .

The following superfamily is put by some authors as the order Neomphalida to the Eogastropoda .
