The Calliostomatidae are a family of ocean-dwelling, small to medium-sized herbivorous snails with around 250 species.
features
The right-hand winding shells of the Calliostomatidae have a more or less top-shaped shape , like those of the top snails (Trochidae). Characteristic of the Calliostomatidae are the oblique angle at which the Columella meets the lower edge of the case mouth, as well as the honeycomb patterned protoconch . Most species do not have an open umbilicus. The apex is usually pointed and straight on the sides. The whorls increase quite sharply, giving the bowl a concave outline.
The foot of the Calliostomatidae, which is rounded at the front and pointed at the back, is usually heavily pigmented and covered with papillae. The head has a pair of long, thin antennae. The radula has a characteristic rachis tooth with a finely sawn cusp and also finely sawn lateral cusps.
Distribution and way of life
The Calliostomatidae can be found worldwide in cold to warm seas at both shallow and great depths. They feed on algae and detritus .
Systematics
The species of the Calliostomatidae were counted in traditional systematics to the gyroscopic snails (Trochidae). Johannes Thiele set them up as a separate subfamily Calliostomatinae within the Trochidae. According to this, they belonged to the adult snails (Archaeogastropoda), an order of the front gill snails (Prosobranchia).
Bouchet and Rocroi (2005) place the Calliostomatidae as a separate family to the Vetigastropoda , a superordinate order in the subclass Orthogastropoda . The family includes two subfamilies and a total of 31 genera:
