The gyro snails (Trochidae) are a large family of marine snails .

features

The family is characterized by trochospiral right-wound casings that can usually be closed by an operculum . The housing varies from low trochospiral with a large opening to high trochospiral with narrow opening. The adult size ranges from about 5 mm to about 130 mm. An inner layer of mother-of-pearl is deposited in the housing.

Systematics

The gyro snails (Trochidae) were placed in the no longer current system according to Johannes Thiele to the old snails (Archaeogastropoda), an order of the front gill snails (Prosobranchia). According to more recent findings, they are counted among the Vetigastropoda , a parent of the subclass Orthogastropoda .
