The turban snails (Turbinidae) are a large family of sea-dwelling, herbivorous snails with several hundred species.
features
The right-hand winding, mostly thick-walled shells of the turban snails are spherical to top-shaped. The surface can be smooth or more sculpted. The inside of the case has mother-of-pearl . They can be easily distinguished from similar top snails by the calcareous operculum , which offers relatively good protection against predators due to its strength.
Distribution and way of life
The turban snails are found in all seas from the polar regions to the tropics at both shallow and great depths, but most species live in shallow tropical and subtropical waters. They feed on algae and detritus .
Systematics
Bouchet and Rocroi (2005) place the turban snails in the Vetigastropoda , a parent of the Orthogastropoda subclass . They divide the family into 8 subfamilies:
- Turbininae Rafinesque, 1815 - Synonyms: Senectinae Swainson, 1840; Imperatorinae Gray, 1847; Astraliinae H. Adams & A. Adams, 1854; Astraeinae Davies, 1935; Bolmidae Delpey, 1941
- Angariinae Gray, 1857 - Synonym: Delphinulinae Stoliczka, 1868
-
Colloniinae Cossmann, 1917
- Tribus Colloniini Cossmann, 1917 - Synonym: Bothropomatinae Thiele, 1924 (inv.); Homalopomatinae Keen, 1960; Petropomatinae Cox, 1960
- Tribus † Adeorbisinini Monari, Conti & Szabo, 1995
- Tribus † Crossostomatini Cox, 1960
- Tribus † Helicocryptini Cox, 1960
- Moellerinae Hickman & McLean, 1990
- † Moreanellinae JC Fischer & Weber, 1997
- Prisogasterinae Hickman & McLean, 1990 - Synonym: Prisogastrinae in Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) (spelling mistake)
- Skeneinae W. Clark, 1851 - Synonym: Delphinoideinae Thiele, 1924
- Tegulinae Kuroda, Habe & Oyama, 1971
The turban snails (Turbinidae) were placed in the no longer current system according to Johannes Thiele to the old snails (Archaeogastropoda), an order of the front gill snails (Prosobranchia).
