The Kureika Reservoir ( Russian Курейское водохранилище ) is a 558 km² large reservoir with 9.96 cubic kilometers of storage space at the Kureika in putorana plateau , the northwestern part of the central Siberian highlands , in the region of Krasnoyarsk , Siberia , Russia ( Asia ). Its dam and hydroelectric power station were built from 1975 to 2002.

Geographical location

The Kureika reservoir is located on average about 60 km north of the Arctic Circle in the south-west foothills of the Putorana Mountains, where it extends in a north-east-south-west direction at the eastern Yenisei tributary Kureika ; in this region the mountains merge into the eastern foothills of the West Siberian lowlands . While the reservoir is fed by the Kureika and many mountain streams, the Kureika is its only drain. The mountains of its surroundings are close to the influence of the Kureika in the reservoir up to 673  m high.

Upstream on the Kureika is the elongated Djupkunsee and for one point downstream the Lower Kureika power plant with a smaller reservoir is being planned.

Reservoir

The Kureika Reservoir, which is rich in bays and islands, has an area of around 558 km² and a capacity of 9.96 km³ when it reaches its destination (full dam).

dam

The dam of the Kureika reservoir was built as a stone and earth embankment dam near the urban settlement of Svetlogorsk . It is 81.5 m high and 1,576 m long.

Kureika power station

The Kureika power plant integrated into the dam ( ), as a hydropower plant with 5 turbines of 120 MW each, has a total output of 600 MW - the annual energy production is around 2.62 billion kWh.

Flora and fauna

Boreal coniferous forests (taiga) thrive on the banks of the Kureika reservoir , especially the high elevations of the surrounding mountains with permafrost soil are determined by the tundra with its mosses and lichens . For example, perch fish , pike and salmon fish live in the fish-rich reservoir .
