successor BMW R 1250 RS

The BMW R 1200 RS is a half-faired motorcycle from the German vehicle manufacturer BMW . The sports tourer is largely based on the liquid-cooled Roadster R 1200 R (series K53, FIN 0A04). The motorcycle was presented at the Intermot in September 2014 . Like all models in the R-series, the road-oriented all-rounder is powered by a boxer engine and final assembly at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau ; production started on February 9, 2015. Sales started on May 12, 2015 at a base price of EUR 13,500. The internal factory code is K54.

After the BMW R 100 RS (incl. Classic ), BMW R 1100 RS , BMW R 1150 RS and BMW R 1200 ST , the K54 is the fifth generation of the RS series, the suffix RS for travel and sport .

history

The first RS appeared in 1976 with a frame-mounted fairing that was optimized in the wind tunnel. This made the BMW R 100 RS the world's first fully faired production motorcycle. In 2007 the “cyclopean” BMW R 1200 ST was discontinued after just two years due to insufficient sales. It wasn't until eight years later that BMW produced another sports tourer with the brand-typical boxer engine.

After the travel enduro GS and GS Adventure, the travel tourer RT and the roadster R, the RS is the fifth model with the air / liquid-cooled boxer engine, which debuted in 2013. Compared to the travel enduro GS and the tourer RT, the boxer engine of the RS has a modified intake tract and new rear silencer, and compared to the Roadster R a 15 mm longer wheelbase to compensate for the additional weight due to the frame-mounted half-shell cladding and the more front-wheel-oriented seating position.

construction

The flat twin generates a nominal output of 92 kW (125 PS) from a displacement of 1170 cm³ at a speed of 7750 rpm. The maximum torque of 125 Newton meters is achieved at an engine speed of 6500 rpm. Compared to the uncovered R1200R, the vehicle geometry has been changed slightly and the caster shortened to 114.8 mm. The seat is 30 mm higher, which increases the knee angle and the handlebars are positioned a little lower. The steering head has an angle of 62.3 degrees. When fully fueled, the vehicle weighs 236 kg, the gross vehicle weight is 450 kg. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 228 km / h. The motorcycle decelerates from 100 km / h to a standstill in under 37 meters.

The VDS of the vehicle identification number is 0A05. Competitive model with a comparable specification is the sports tourer Kawasaki Z1000 SX .

review

"There are better town bikes, touring bikes and sports bikes, but you'd have to buy one of each to beat the RS."

"There are better city, touring and sport bikes, but you have to buy one of each to outperform the RS."

- Roland Brown : Visordown

“BMW has changed the geometry slightly compared to the uncovered R, the caster has become smaller. Nevertheless, you still notice the top-heaviness of the motorcycle in fast alternating curves. There isn't really a lot of sport in the tourer. The footpegs also touch down a bit early for my taste. [...] Anyone expecting a sports tourer like the Kawasaki ZZR or the Honda VFR will probably be disappointed. The BMW is much more a sports tourer like the Yamaha Fazer is: a naked bike with half fairing. "

- Philipp Kautzmann : Heise online

"[The RS is] as sporty as it is comfortable, combines agility with high-speed stability, supplements dynamism with excellent braking performance, and is one of the few machines with which even long motorway stretches can be a pleasure."

“Travel and sport are what the new model combines with the beefier boxer engine. As long as 'sport' means very fast on country roads. "

- Thomas Schmieder : Motorcycle

“In practice, the RS is just as easy and precise to drive as the more compact R. Its handiness is just as impressive as its own stability, be it in curves or at high speed on the straight. It masters inclines cleanly and precisely without appearing any wobbly. Both solo and with luggage; The same applies to driving with a full load, i.e. with two people plus luggage. "

“The RS is not as quick to turn in as a supersport / superbike, but it's not ponderous either. And once it is tipped in, the bike feels planted and steady. My overriding sensation aboard the RS was predicable stability. At a fast or slow clip, the RS always felt sure-footed. [...] On the sport-touring spectrum I'd rate the RT about 20% sport and 80% touring, whereas the RS inverts that formula. "

“The RS doesn't turn in as quickly as a Supersport / Superbike, but it's not slow either. And as soon as it's tipped, the bike feels neat. My primary sensation on the RS was predictable stability. The RS always felt confident at both fast and slow speeds. [...] On a sport touring scale, I would rate the RT with around 20% sport and 80% touring, whereas the RS reverses the formula. "
