Previous model Honda CBR 1100 XX

The VFR1200F is a sports touring motorcycle from the Japanese manufacturer Honda .

The fully faired motorcycle was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show on October 23, 2009 and positioned on the market in 2010 as the successor to the CBR 1100 XX (also marketed as the Super Blackbird). Production began in October 2009 in the prefecture of Kumamoto on the southernmost main island of Kyūshū in the city of the same name in Kumamoto in Japan under the factory code SC 63.

technology

engine

The engine and gearbox of the VFR 1200F

The liquid-cooled four - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 127 kW (173 hp) from a displacement of 1237 cm³ at a speed of 10,000 min −1 . Already at a speed of 4000 min -1 are to be available nominally 90 percent of the maximum torque.

The transversely installed V4 engine features a technically unusual cylinder arrangement: the cylinder bank angle is 76 ° instead of the usual 90 °, the two rear cylinders (No. 2 + 3) are arranged in the middle, the front cylinders (No. 1 + 4) are each placed on the outside (just like Honda's 800cc MotoGP V4 racing machine RC212V, with which Casey Stoner won the World Championship title in 2011 in the MotoGP class). The engine works on the principle of the big bang firing order . The firing order does not take place evenly every 180 degrees of a crankshaft revolution, as with an in-line four-cylinder or the V4 predecessor. As with the legendary Honda VFR 750 R RC30, two cylinders are ignited in quick succession. The ignition takes place asymmetrically at 104-256-104-256 degrees. In contrast to the usual uniform 180 ° ignition sequence (with a 180 ° crank pin offset), here two cylinders are ignited in quick succession with a 104 ° interval. In order to achieve an optimal mass balance, a crank pin offset of 28 ° was chosen (calculation: 180 ° minus double cylinder angle equal to crank pin offset → 180 ° - 2 × 76 ° = 28 °). Due to this combination of cylinder angle, crank pin offset and firing sequence, no balance shafts are required to protect against undesirable vibrations. The space-saving Unicam valve control with a chain-driven camshaft per cylinder bank actuates two intake valves directly via bucket tappets and two exhaust valves per combustion chamber via roller rocker arms . Despite 455 cm³ more displacement, the engine is only slightly higher and is significantly shorter than the 90 ° V4 engine of the VFR800FI . The four cylinders have a bore of 81 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 60 mm with a compression ratio of 12: 1.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.0 s, to 200 km / h in 8.9 s and reaches an electronically governed top speed of 250 km / h.

The average fuel consumption is 5.9 l per 100 km at a speed of 130 km / h. The fuel tank has a volume of 18.5 l. The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane and specifies a theoretical range of 314 km. The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated catalytic converter and falls below the pollutant limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard .

Drive-by-wire technology

The engine control unit ( ECU ) controls injection pressure, injection duration and ignition depending on the speed, the gear engaged and the coolant temperature. In addition, the signals for the servomotors of the throttle valves are evaluated by a control unit that generates the potentiometer on the throttle cable. This technology, which works without Bowden cables , is called drive-by-wire or, in this case, throttle-by-wire . At the same time, the ECU cares depending on the throttle valve position to the actuator motor for the flap in the upper mouth of the muffler , the 5000-6000 min -1 opens and provides for an abrupt power delivery.

Double clutch

For the first time in a production motorcycle, a dual clutch transmission ( DCT ) is optionally available for the VFR1200F . In contrast to the car, the transmission does not select the next gear on the load-free transmission shaft, but only shifts when the driver or the automatic function gives the command. A shift process takes 500 ms many times longer than in current cars with dual clutch transmissions, but the Honda DCT can react faster than a passenger car dual clutch transmission when the accelerator is suddenly released and then downshifted.

Composite braking system with anti-lock braking system

The front wheel is decelerated by two radially screwed six-piston fixed caliper brakes , the braking forces are transmitted via two floating brake discs with a diameter of 320 mm. The rear wheel is braked by a two-piston floating caliper, the brake disc has a diameter of 276 mm. The front and rear brakes work together, controlled by a common pressure modulator. When the handbrake lever is actuated, the six pistons of the right brake caliper and four of the left are moved. When the foot brake pedal is pressed, the two pistons of the rear brake caliper and, additionally, controlled by the ABS pressure modulator with electromagnetic control valves, the two upper pistons of the left front brake caliper are also activated.

Cardan drive

The low-maintenance cardan drive is integrated into the single swing arm . The pivot point of the swing arm is positioned above and behind the front universal joint of the cardan shaft , so the shaft does not run exactly parallel to the longitudinal axis of the swing arm. A sliding piece on the constant velocity joint in front of the ring gear housing ensures the necessary length compensation of the cardan shaft when the rear wheel springs in and out. A total of three shock absorbers were integrated in the drive train: on the shaft, between the clutch and the transmission output shaft and in front of the cardan joint . The single-sided swing arm is supported by a progressive lever linkage and a central spring strut on the frame.

Electrical system

The starter battery has a capacity of 12 Ah and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 570 watts.

Model year 2012

In the 2012 model year, the engine characteristics were optimized and fuel consumption was reduced by changing the PGM-FI fuel injection. The tank volume was increased by 0.5 liters and the seat bench and the LED mirror indicators were modified. A traction control has been added and the electronic control of the optional double clutch transmission has been optimized.

Color variations

The machine was offered in 2010 in three paint variants:

  • Candy Prominence Red
  • Pearl Sunbeam White
  • Seal Silver Metallic

The machine was offered in four paint variants in 2012:

  • Candy Tahitian Blue
  • Darkness Black Metallic
  • Candy Prominence Red
  • Titanium Blade Metallic

Reviews

“The front flows smoothly into the side paneling, which in turn merges with the tank. Flow-optimized, plenty of wind protection, stable high-speed location. Ideal conditions. But fans of the legendary CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird will be disappointed because the VFR only uses its capabilities up to a maximum of 250 km / h. "

- Christoph Lentsch : motorcycle

“With the new VFR 1200 F, Honda has put a technology carrier on 17-inch wheels that, as a V-man, successfully bridges the gap between sport and touring, while clearly emphasizing the sporty side. In terms of quality, the VFR meets the high demands of the touring clientele, which is underscored by a three-year guarantee and the extended maintenance intervals of 12,000 kilometers. "

“The long-awaited VFR has turned out to be a good motorcycle, a very good one in fact. However, it is not an excellent one. The multi-level performance characteristic is rather a hindrance, the equipment sparse. The 1200er shines with many technological delicacies. There is also a three-year guarantee and 12,000 maintenance intervals. [...] The engine characteristics are unbalanced, the propulsion only appropriate beyond the 4000 mark. Below 3000 rpm, uncharacteristically for this displacement class, there is listlessness. "
