engine

For the K models from the K 1200 S, BMW Motorrad had developed a completely new water-cooled four - cylinder engine . The in- line engine was installed horizontally and the cylinder bank was tilted extremely far forward at 55 °. The engine is equipped with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, electronic injection and a controlled three-way catalytic converter .

With a displacement of 1,157 cm³, the engine generates a nominal output of 123 kW (167 hp) at a speed of 10,250 min −1 . The maximum torque is the manufacturer of 130 Nm at 8,250 min -1 to. The manufacturer specifies the maximum speed as "over 200 km / h"; according to test reports it is about 280 km / h. According to these tests, the acceleration values from 0 to 100 km / h are 2.8 seconds, from 0 to 200 km / h about 8.5 seconds.

landing gear

The chassis is a modified and weight-reduced further development of the elements previously installed in the K 1200 models and consists of a box section frame made of aluminum. The rear wheel is guided by a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum with Paralever , the front wheel by a central spring strut with the Duolever lever system used for the first time in a production motorcycle ; an evolution of the previous Telelever . The spring preload and rebound damping at the rear can be hydraulically and continuously adjusted by hand (electronically if required); with the Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) option, the rear compression and front rebound can also be electronically adjusted. The electronic adjustment options can also be used while driving.

With a full tank of fuel and without a driver, the machine weighs 248 kg, the payload is specified as 202 kg. The official consumption figures per 100 km are 4.7 liters (Super Plus, at a constant 90 km / h) or 5.5 l (at a constant 120 km / h). During quick test drives, mixed consumption values of 6.3 l Super Plus were measured. The list price for the basic version in autumn 2006 was 15,200 euros.

Brakes

The BMW K 1200 S was equipped with the integral ABS from FTE automotive as standard , in which the handbrake lever acts simultaneously on the front and rear wheels. The system had constructive weaknesses. Since mid-August 2006, the motorcycle has therefore been supplied with the partially integral ABS from Continental Teves (without brake booster ). A conventional braking system is also available on request.

Comparable competing models are the Suzuki Hayabusa 1300 or Kawasaki ZZR 1400 .

Reviews

“The K 1200 S owes its victory to its good all-round properties and its great chassis, which in combination with the ESA, which is subject to a surcharge, scores big plus points. The engine doesn't quite have the class and smoothness of the Japanese competition, but the resulting performance is quite remarkable. The passengers feel best accommodated on the K because it is not as extremely geared towards sports as the competition. "

- Till Kohlmey : Touring driver

“The brake reacts too extreme when sneaking through cities. As soon as the finger is on the lever, the anchor flies out completely. The front brake is as far removed from sensitive metering as Tokyo is from Tauberbischofsheim. The reverse is true for the rear brake: only powerful pedaling makes a difference. Not exactly ideal, but you can get used to the two brakes. Also of the tough load change reactions of the cardan. Or the hooked gearbox and the hard throttle response. "
