Grip heating

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A heated grip can be found on various machines, technical devices and motorized two-wheelers. It is a heating in the handle of the equipment, which should enable the user to operate the machine safely even at low outside temperatures.

application

Motorcycles and other motor vehicles

Due to the airstream, the limbs can cool down very quickly on longer journeys and when the outside temperature is low. The hands are particularly affected because they are particularly exposed to the wind and are only protected by the relatively thin motorcycle gloves.

Since the 1980s, some motorcycles have therefore had heated rubber grips: The heating is electric and can be regulated in stages or continuously depending on the model. Heated grips are usually special equipment from the manufacturer that is subject to a surcharge, but they can also be retrofitted.

In addition to the normal heated grips, which replace the rubber grips, there are cartridge heaters that are placed in the handlebars. The advantage here is that the original rubber grips can be used.

Other vehicles such as snowmobiles and ATVs have optional heating elements in the handle and in the thumb throttle .

A forum for BMW motorcycles mentions 36 W maximum power for both handle heaters connected in parallel and the realization by means of a wire winding on the plastic pipe under the brake rubber. The reduced heating power is realized by the series resistor, a resistance line to the branch point of the supply line to the handles.

When installing heated grips, they must be permanently secured against twisting, possibly by gluing them to the handlebar tube, in order to protect the supply lines. The heating element can be implemented as a heating film with conductor tracks.

Coolride, Solingen, offers heating cartridges with an outer diameter of 12–20 mm, which can be clamped inside the handle tube and which have a power of 52 W as a pair.

Power saws, snow blowers

For forestry, chainsaws are optionally available with heated handles. The manufacturer Stihl realizes the heating of the holding tube at the front and rear handle with heating foils fed by an electricity generator on the motor shaft. Husqvarna speaks of heating coils, i.e. a winding of electrical resistance wire.

Handle heaters on chainsaws have been around in Austria since at least around 1998. In colder countries, electric heating of the carburetor was first introduced and then the handle heating was added. Handle heating is no longer available in Austria for all models of chainsaws (optional).

Handle heaters have also been available on handheld snow throwers since at least 2008.

In both cases, the heating of the handles works against the accumulation of slippery ice in frosty conditions. Gloves that come into contact with snow - especially on chains for wood conveyance - or that get wet in any other way are also dried. The supply of heat to the hands reduces their tendency to become numb and stiffen in the cold, which increases work safety .
