successor BMW F 800 GT

The BMW F 800 S and BMW F 800 ST are motorcycles from the vehicle manufacturer BMW . They were finalized from 2006 to 2012 at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . The development time from concept studies to series production was 47 months. Sales started in September 2006. The model designation ST means street / touring . The successor model of the K71 series is the BMW F 800 GT .

Development and description

After the F 800 S, the motorcycle was the second model in the F-800 series and is powered by a Rotax engine that BMW and Rotax jointly developed. The F 800 ST is largely identical to the BMW F 800 S , but has full fairing, a higher tubular handlebar that is more suitable for touring, a higher windshield, different tires and a luggage rack as standard, as well as a more comfortable seat and a painted front wheel cover.

drive

The water-cooled two - cylinder four-stroke engine generates a nominal output of 62.5  kW (85  hp ) from a displacement of 798 cm³ at a compression ratio of 12: 1 and has a maximum torque of 86 Nm at a speed of 5800 min −1 . The two cylinders of the in- line engine , inclined 30 degrees forward, have a bore of 82 mm in diameter. The pistons have a stroke of 75.6 mm. There are two overhead camshafts (DOHC) in the cylinder head , which control two intake and two exhaust valves via rocker arms.

Detailed view of the Rotax 804 with secondary drive

The two pistons of the parallel twin move up and down at the same time ( synchronous rotation ) and have an even firing sequence . The ignition interval of 360 ° has design-related advantages in terms of power and torque development. For first-order mass balancing, an eccentric is located in the center of the crankshaft , which moves a counterweight mounted on a rocker via a connecting rod. The engine was produced by Rotax in Gunskirchen , Upper Austria , and delivered ready-to-install to the BMW plant in Berlin.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 221 km / h. Consumption at a constant 130 km / h was 4.1 l per 100 km ( 800 S ).

Power transmission

The primary drive works with gears. A mechanically operated multi-disc clutch in an oil bath separates the power and a claw-shift transmission with six gears converts the torque. BMW chose a toothed belt as the secondary drive , as this virtually maintenance-free system had already proven itself in the BMW F 650 CS touring bike .

Electrical system

The starter battery has a capacity of 14 ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 400 watts.

Fuel supply

The fuel-air mixture forms an electronically controlled intake manifold injection . A motor control (BMS-K) regulates it via two 46 millimeter throttle valves.

The average fuel consumption is 4.5 liters per 100 km. The fuel tank is located under the seat and has a capacity of 16 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The manufacturer recommends unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane . A regulated three-way catalytic converter with a secondary air system treats the exhaust gas ; with it, the motorcycle falls below the pollutant limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard .

Frame and chassis

The F 800 S / ST has a bridge frame made of aluminum profiles and cast parts. The rear frame is made of tubular steel and is bolted to the bridge frame at four points. The rear wheel is sprung by a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum with a central spring strut. The front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with a 43 mm standpipe diameter and 125 mm travel. The motor is bolted to the bridge frame in eight places and has a load-bearing function.

A hydraulically operated double disc brake with a four-piston brake caliper decelerates on the front wheel, and a disc brake with a single-piston floating caliper on the rear. A standard anti-lock braking system supports the deceleration on both brakes. The ST weighs 209 kg ready to drive, a maximum of 194 kg may be loaded.

equipment

An on-board computer was offered for an extra charge , which has a fuel remaining indicator and gear indicator as well as the coolant temperature, average speed and consumption, current consumption, range and ambient temperature.

Reviews

Norbert Kappes from the trade journal Motorrad criticized the noises in the drive train with the words: “But simply start overtaking with the wrist on the sixth, that doesn't work with the F 800. Switching is hip - and often associated with noise. Usually the gear changes are accompanied by a violent "clone". […] Whether during load changes or in coasting mode, it always clones and clacks as if there was plenty of play between the gears. ”BMW responded to the criticism with technical changes to the drive train.

“But we particularly like the enormous lightness and agility with which the F 800 S and - thanks to the slightly higher and wider tubular handlebar - especially the F 800 ST can be circled around bends of all kinds. There aren't many motorcycles on the market that can provide as much cornering fun. In addition to the ingenious technology and weight distribution, this is also due to the low absolute weight. "

“The F 800 drives like a completely normal, very well tuned and fairly handy motorcycle. The wonderful engine is in a magnificent chassis. While in the last few years one sometimes had the impression that BMW has often chosen unusual technical solutions as an end in itself, with the F 800 one can be pretty sure that not only technically-minded engineers but also enthusiastic motorcyclists were involved in the development.
