Hidaka ( Japanese 日 高 支 庁 , Hidaka-shinkō-kyoku ) is a sub- prefecture of Hokkaidō Prefecture . It has an area of ​​4,811.91 km² and a population of 82,281 (as of September 30, 2005).

history

In 1897 the Urakawa sub-prefecture ( 浦 河 支 庁 , Urakawa-shichō ) was established. In 1932 the name was changed to Hidaka Sub-prefecture ( 日 高 支 庁 , Hidaka-shichō ). Hidaka was the name of a province of the same name that was here from 1869 to 1882 before the prefectures were established.

When Hokkaidō was reorganized on April 1, 2010, the name was changed to Hidaka-shinkō-kyoku , and the administrative subordination to the Iburi sub-prefecture .

geography

The western foothills of the Hidaka Mountains extend over large parts of the sub-prefecture. Hidaka is sparsely populated and is home to many of Hokkaidō's natural resources.

Reorganizations

  • On March 1, 2006, the cities of Mombetsu and Hidaka from Saru County merged to form the new city of Hidaka.
  • On March 31, 2006, the cities of Mitsuishi from Mitsuishi County and Shizunai from Shizunai County merged to form Shinhidaka City in the newly created Hidaka County. Mitsuishi counties and Shizunai counties were both dissolved.
