Kamikawa ( Japanese 上 川 総 合 振興 局 , Kamikawa-sōgō-shinkō-kyoku ) is a sub- prefecture of Hokkaidō Prefecture . The name is derived from Kamikawa no hitobito no shūraku ( 川 上 の 人 々 の 集 落 , German "settlement of the people from the upper reaches"), a translation into Japanese from the Ainu Peni Unguri Kotan . It has an area of ​​9,852.21 km² and a population of 535,456 (as of October 1, 2005).

history

Japanese settlement began in 1867. The establishment of the Kamikawa sub-prefecture ( 上 川 支 庁 , Kamikawa-shichō ) followed in 1897. In 1899, the village of Furano - the present-day city of Furano and the Sorachi district with Kamifurano , Nakafurano and Minamifurano - became the sub-prefecture of Sorachi Kamikawa slammed.

When Hokkaidō was reorganized on April 1, 2010, it was renamed Kamikawa-sōgō-shinkō-kyoku . The community Horokanai from the sub-prefecture of Sorachi was added to her.
