The Samani train station ( Japanese 様 似 駅 , Samani-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It is located in Hidaka Sub-Prefecture, Samani City .

description

Aerial view (1978)

Samani is a terminus at the far end of the main Hidaka line . This leads from Tomakomai to here and is operated by the JR Hokkaido railway company. The station is oriented from west to east; it comprises two butt tracks and, parallel to them, a station building on the south side. The shape, reminiscent of a through station, goes back to plans that were never realized to extend the railway line beyond Samani. The reception building houses a tourist information center. Due to storm damage, the Hidaka main line southeast of Mukawa is currently not passable, so a rail replacement service is offered.

In the forecourt of the station there is a bus stop operated by the JR Hokkaido Bus company (rail replacement service to Mukawa and bus service to Hiroo ).

history

The Ministry of Railways opened the last section of the Hidaka Main Line between Urakawa and Samani on August 10, 1937. According to Project 133 contained in the appendix to the revised Railway Construction Act of 1922, the line was to lead from Samani via Cape Erimo to Hiroo , where it would meet the Hiroo line to Obihiro , which was opened in 1929 . However, the line was never built due to a lack of demand.

From 1959 to 1986 the Japanese State Railways offered express trains from Samani to Sapporo . It stopped handling goods on December 15, 1982, and checked baggage on February 1, 1984. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . The Hidaka main line between Mukawa and Samani has been out of service since January 8, 2015, after strong tidal waves washed away the track bed and the damage made the line impassable.
