Viola Weigel (born May 19, 1966 in Karlsruhe ) is a German art historian and curator .

Career

Weigel studied art history in Frankfurt, Manchester and Basel. She did her doctorate at the University of Basel under Professor Gottfried Boehm with a thesis on “The recovery of the visible. Studies on Visuality in English Painting between 1910 and 1920 ”. This study was published in 2006. From 1997 to 2005 Weigel was assistant curator at the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel. There she worked on the retrospectives of Anselm Kiefer in 2001 and Ellsworth Kelly in 2002/2003. In 2005 she moved to the Museum für Gestaltung in Zurich as curator , where she was primarily responsible for the arts and crafts collection, the Museum Bellerive . In 2007 Weigel was elected director of the Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven . She curated exhibitions on contemporary art and the art collection of the city of Wilhelmshaven . Solo exhibitions were dedicated to Gereon Krebber in 2007 , Cécile Hummel in 2008, Lothar Götz in 2011, Jan Albers in 2016 and Yvette Kießling in 2018. Weigel also planned themed exhibitions such as “Under water - over water” in 2009 and “Destination: Wilhelmshaven. Photographers look at the North Sea city ”or in 2011 about Franz Radziwill during the Nazi era, which were often related to Wilhelmshaven. Viola Weigel has two 5-year contracts with the Verein der Kunstfreunde für Wilhelmshaven e. V., who runs the Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven. In 2018 she became custodian and curator of the painting and sculpture collection of the Chemnitz art collections . In 2019 she took over the management of an art foundation in northern Germany.
