Esanbe Hanakita Kojima ( Japanese エ サ ン ベ 鼻 北 小島 , 'small island north of the Esanbe headland' ) was an island belonging to Japan , which was located 500 meters from Sarufutsu on the main northern island of Hokkaido in the Sea of Okhotsk .
The island got its name in 2014 along with 157 other uninhabited islands in the course of substantiating territorial claims. When surveyed in 1987, its highest point was 1.4 meters above sea level. The area of the island was never determined. On the official map of the Japanese land surveying office ( Kokudo Chiriin ), however, it is marked with a size of 25 × 20 m.
In 2018 it was found that the island no longer exists. The reason for this is still unclear. It is suspected that erosion is caused by waves and drift ice .
