Ivan Alexandrowitsch Panin ( Russian Иван Александрович Панин ; born July 22, 1987 in Ufa , Bashkir ASSR ) is a former Russian Nordic combined skier . The multiple Russian champion celebrated his greatest success by winning the team competition at the Winter Universiade 2011 .

Career

Three participations in Junior World Championships

Panin, who grew up in Leninogorsk in the Republic of Tatarstan , started for the ZSK Leninogorsk association based there. In mid-March 2005 he made his international debut in Vuokatti as part of the B World Cup , but missed the points. About two weeks later, he took part in the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships 2005 in Finnish Rovaniemi , where he reached both the sprint and the team only the rear ranks. After he had not competed internationally in the meantime, Panin showed himself a little better at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2006 in Kranj compared to the previous year. In the individual competitions it was enough to rank 33 and 28, while he was fifth with the 4 × 5 km relay based on the Gundersen method . At the subsequent Junior World Championships in Tarvisio , he deteriorated in the individual again to ranks 57 and 51, whereupon he was not used in the team. On February 15, 2008, he made it into the points of the B World Cup for the first time in the sprint in Iiyama . He also succeeded in doing this at the other stops on the Asia trip, ultimately finishing 68th in the overall ranking.

His first two world championships and successes at the Universiade

At the beginning of winter 2008/09 Panin made his debut in Ruka in the World Cup , but failed clearly against strong competition. Although he remained pointless in the further course of the season, Panin was appointed to the Russian squad for the Nordic World Ski Championships 2009 in Liberec , where he was used in all four decisions. His best individual result was the 43rd place in the Gundersen individual on the large hill. In addition, he was tenth with the team together with Anton Kamenew , Nijas Nabejew and Sergei Maslennikow . After trying unsuccessfully at the highest level both in the Grand Prix in summer and in the World Cup at the beginning of winter , Panin faced the competition again in the Continental Cup from mid-January 2010 . In this series of competitions, he also primarily competed in the 2010/11 season and was able to regularly reach the points. His best result of the season made it the fifth rank in Harrachov . In the 2011 Winter Universiade in Turkey's Erzurum he won as a graduate of the State Pedagogical University in Yelabuga the bronze medal in the Gundersen single and was also Universiade champion with the team. A few weeks later, Panin showed less satisfactory performance at the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2011 , so that he had to be content with ranks 45 and 50 in the individual and two eleventh places in team competitions.

First World Cup points

At the beginning of September 2011 Panin won his first three Grand Prix points at the Grand Prix in Oberstdorf . In winter he came closer and closer to the points in the World Cup , before surprisingly reached twelfth place in Ramsau in mid-December and thus scored World Cup points for the first time. The basis for this success was the ski jumping, so that he was already fifth on the trail . In the further course of the season he was only able to win four points in Seefeld . He finished the season in 48th place in the overall World Cup ranking. At the beginning of January 2013 Panin ran for the first and only time on the podium in third place at the Continental Cup competition in Tchaikovsky . The 2013 Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme were again disappointing for Panin. He was last with the team and penultimate in the team sprint together with Ernest Jachin . In the individual competitions based on the Gundersen method, 45th and 44th place were only enough for the lower ranks.

Olympic participation and end of career

At the start of the 2013/14 World Cup season in Ruka , Panin achieved his second-best World Cup result with 21st place. He could not confirm this result at the following stations and from then on remained pointless. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he finished 43rd in the Gundersen individual on the large hill. Together with Yevgeny Klimow , Nijas Nabejew and Ernest Jachin, he finished ninth, more than five and a half minutes behind. In the following years, Panin only competed sporadically in international competitions. After the Continental Cup races in Nizhny Tagil in March 2017 , he ended his career. At the national level, he was able to win one championship title in individual and another five with the team.
