OpenWindows is a desktop environment for workstations developed by Sun Microsystems (now Oracle ). OpenWindows was included in later versions of SunOS 4 and Solaris until it was abandoned in Solaris 9 in favor of CDE .

history

OpenWindows 1.0 was released in 1989 as a separately available accessory for SunOS 4.0 and replaced the older SunView at that time . From 1990 OpenWindows 2.0 was supplied with SunOS 4.1.1.

Solaris 2.0, the successor to SunOS 4, was shipped with OpenWindows 3.0.1, Solaris 2.3 (1993) with OpenWindows 3.3 and Solaris 7 with OpenWindows 3.6.1.

In 1993, Sun, together with other major manufacturers of Unix-like operating systems as part of the Open Group , decided to create a standardized desktop environment with Common Desktop Environment and therefore delivered the last OpenWindows version 3.6.2 with Solaris 8. As of Solaris 9, OpenWindows was no longer included and development was discontinued.
