The Common Desktop Environment , CDE for short , is a desktop environment for Unix systems published under LGPL and uses Motif as the underlying toolkit for creating the graphic elements.
CDE was developed as proprietary software since June 1993 by the Open Group , which includes companies such as HP , IBM and Sun Microsystems . It was the standard desktop on many commercial Unix systems until 2000. Due to the rapid development of alternative free desktop environments such as Gnome or KDE under Linux , the future of CDE is uncertain, as the two Unix manufacturers Sun and HP announced the change from CDE to Gnome as early as 2001. As of early 2006, Solaris 10 includes both CDE and the GNOME-based Java Desktop System . The CDE desktop no longer existed in OpenSolaris . On August 6, 2012, the CDE source code was published under the LGPL. The previous petition to disclose the sources was therefore successful. The CDE source code is available on SourceForge and is continuously developed.
Inspired by CDE, the open source desktop environments KDE and Xfce emerged later , but after their initial visual proximity, they now differ significantly from CDE.
