The Java Desktop System ( JDS ) is a no longer actively developed desktop environment by Sun Microsystems for Solaris . It is based on GNOME 2, but has been heavily modified. With Solaris 11, the previously offered choice between CDE and the Java Desktop System has been replaced by a GNOME interface that has not been modified any further.
development
The idea behind JDS was to create a system for the average computer user. The software package is equipped with e-mail , calendar , office , web , instant messaging and multimedia applications. The operating concept is partly based on that of Microsoft Windows .
JDS is the standard desktop for the Solaris Express Community Edition and Solaris Express Developer Edition. With Solaris 10, you can still choose between JDS and the classic CDE .
