Wolfgang Filbrich is a former German cross-country skier and today's ski sports official.

Career

As an athlete

Filbrich started for the SC Motor Zella-Mehlis and won the bronze medal over 4 × 10 km with the club relay at the GDR ski championships in 1971 in Johanngeorgenstadt . In the 15 km individual race, he was previously sixth.

As a trainer & official

During the GDR era, Filbrich took over the post of head coach in the biathlon at ASK Vorwärts Oberhof . He also studied sports and became a certified sports teacher. After the fall of the Wall , Filbrich took over responsibility at the winter sports resort of Oberhof and was later for many years the head of organization for the Biathlon World Cup at Rennsteig. In 1996 he became managing director of Rennsteig-Thermen GmbH in Oberhof. In addition, for many years he was in charge of the Oberhof location of the Olympic Training Center in Thuringia and the federal performance center there. At the 2004 Biathlon World Championships , Filbrich was chairman of the organizing committee. In 2008 Filbrich was investigated on suspicion of corruption in connection with the expansion and construction of the winter sports facilities in Oberhof. The procedure, which was initiated on the basis of a consultancy contract with one of the construction companies later involved in the planning of the Oberhof sports facilities, was discontinued against payment of a premium.

In 2014 Filbrich retired from his position as head of the Oberhof winter sports center and retired. His successor was the former bobsleigh pilot André Lange . Because of his services to the biathlon in Oberhof, a water storage pond in the Arena on the Rennsteig was given the name "Wolfgangsee".

Private

Filbrichs attended the children's and youth sports school "Paul Harras" in Zella-Mehlis from 1961 to 1970 . He and Sigrun Krause have two sons. Jens Filbrich was also active as a cross-country skier and won several medals at world championships and the Olympic Games. His brother Raik was active as a Nordic combined athlete. On June 9, 2007 Filbrich was awarded the Order of Merit of the Free State of Thuringia .
