The Hetzner Online GmbH is an Internet service provider based in Gunzenhausen . The company has a total of around 290 employees (2018).
history
Hetzner Online GmbH was founded in 1997 by Martin Hetzner under the name "Hetzner Online Service". In 1999, the independently operating partner company Hetzner (Pty) Ltd was founded in South Africa, which has been operating under the name xneelo since July 2019 . Between 2000 and 2015, Hetzner Online was run as a stock corporation.
Product portfolio
The product portfolio of Hetzner Online GmbH primarily comprises the rental of physical server hardware, bare metal servers , and referred to as "Dedicated Root Servers" at Hetzner. The customer has exclusive and full root access to these systems via the network . In addition, web hosting , domain registration , dedicated hosting, shared hosting, cloud solutions, network storage called Storage Box , managed Nextcloud under the name Storage Share , and SSL certificates are offered.
At the Nuremberg , Falkenstein / Vogtl. and Helsinki , customers have the option of setting their own hardware in a data center using colocation services .
In addition to new physical server systems, older server models that have already been rented are auctioned for rent in the form of a Dutch auction on the “server exchange” . The prices of the servers offered fall cyclically after a defined time window down to a lower fixed amount. Hetzner will replace defective hardware that was operated until failure with the physical server hardware rented. However, customers are responsible for monitoring themselves , for example using SMART and securing against data loss such as creating backups.
Infrastructure
In Falkenstein / Vogtl., Nuremberg and Helsinki the company operates three large data centers with an area of several thousand square meters. The Helsinki location is the smallest of the three locations and was opened in spring 2018. The locations are redundantly connected to each other via their own fiber optic network, as well as to central exchange nodes, such as B. at DE-CIX , AMS-IX , DATA-IX, Netnod-IX and V-IX, connected for public peering . In addition, there is also the option of “private peering” at selected locations and above certain volumes, as is the case, for example, in the merger with the Hetzner network with Amazon or Google .
The data centers are certified according to ISO / IEC 27001 . The power supply comes from regenerative energy sources, the equipment and operation of the data center is based on climate-friendliness. For example, the waste heat from the servers is used to heat offices.
Hetzner Online participated as a co-investor in the submarine cable C-Lion (pronounced: "Sea-Lion") of the Finnish provider Cinia , which connects Rostock with Helsinki with a 1,100 km long fiber optic cable . It is also used to establish a secure and fast connection between the data centers in Germany and the data center location in Finland.
Incidents
Hacker attacks
In October 2010, a configuration error was exploited at Hetzner Online to access sensitive customer data such as passwords. The purpose was supposedly only to draw attention to the security gap.
In June 2013, Hetzner Online was the victim of a hacker attack using a conspicuously advanced rootkit as a tool. During the attack, the undetected perpetrators were able to compromise the server monitoring system and thus obtain customer data, including passwords and payment information.
Legal proceedings for no.spam.ee
In 2013, the written Estonian anti- spam activist Tõnu Samuel a blog entry about the alleged spammers Silver Teede on its website no.spam.ee . In retaliation, Teede turned to Hetzner Online, Samuel's hosting service provider, who then decided to take the website offline without a court order. In a subsequent lawsuit, an Estonian court ruled that there were no valid reasons for the shutdown and also awarded Samuel € 11,500 in damages for the loss of his website.
Russian complaints about Glavcom
During the annexation of the Crimea by Russia and the Ukraine War tried the Russian Federal Service for Media Supervision (Roskomnadzor) in August 2014 many news agencies, including the British BBC , reporting on the "March for a federalization of Siberia " in Novosibirsk to to forbid. Russia was concerned that the drive for autonomy there could lead to a later secession of Siberia. Like many others, the Ukrainian news portal Glavcom refused to take an article on the topic offline. Roskomnadzor soon put pressure on Glavom's hosting service provider, Hetzner Online. Hetzner Online then sent the operator of Glavcom a message on August 4th that the article allegedly violated the terms and conditions, and on August 6th threatened to shut down the website. The cooperation in the censorship efforts caused a sensation, the Reporters Without Borders voiced a reprimand against Roskomnadzor, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry was irritated by Hetzner's reaction.
As a result, Hetzner Online apologized, denied the intention of censorship and stated that it was a regrettable wrong decision by customer service.
Blocking of the Novaya Gazeta
On January 11, 2016, Hetzner Online switched off the website of Novaya Gazeta , a major government-critical newspaper in Russia . The newspaper assessed the incident as political censorship without a prior court order.
