The core of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Maria and Georg in Rauenstein , a district of the Frankenblick community in the Sonneberg district ( Thuringia ), dates back to the 15th century. It stands on the southwestern steep slope of the castle hill, characterizing the townscape.

history

A castle chapel of the castle complex built by Messrs. Schaumberg in 1349 is documented with the mention of an "Altar zu Rauenstein" for the year 1366. After the castle and chapel were destroyed, in 1453 the Bishop of Augsburg and Cardinal Peter von Schaumberg issued a letter of indulgence for the reconstruction of the church. As a result, a late Gothic church was built, which was destroyed by fire in 1569 and rebuilt with the current nave by 1599. In 1670, renovation work was completed, which also included the upper floors of the tower with its current shape.

From 1862 to 1864, the interior was redesigned in color and a new organ was installed as part of renovation work . Extensive renovation work and the addition of the sacristy were carried out in 1954. Between 1980 and 1990 the dry rot was the reason for renovation work.

Originally the chapel had the status of a private chapel of the Lords of Schaumberg. After lengthy disputes over parish rights, Rauenstein belonged to the district of Schalkau after 1700 . In 1892 the community was spun off and merged with Meschenbach in 1903 . In 1978 Grümpen and Theuern were incorporated .

layout

The church stands in an exposed position on the south-western steep slope of the castle hill, at the entrance to Rauenstein Castle . The hall church has a late Gothic, recessed, polygonal closed choir with pointed arched windows in the east . It is spanned by a star vault and separated from the nave by a triumphal arch . The facade of the nave consists of quarry stone masonry. It is partially plastered and structured by corner blocks as well as by arched and round windows. The nave has a flat ceiling that is sloped on the sides. There is a single-storey gallery all around on three sides . The church tower is at the western end. It has a rectangular floor plan and a Welsche hood with a lantern .

The church is equipped with a pulpit from the 16th century, which has a polygonal pulpit with a tooth cut finish and stands on a fluted column with a diamond pattern. The crucifix was made by the Schalkau technical school for drawing, wood carving and modeling in 1894/95.

The gallery parapets were painted with coats of arms in 1894, which have a connection to the history of the von Schaumberg family. In the choir are the tombstones of Georg Sebastian von Schaumberg (1638), Sophia Katharina von Schaumberg (1676), Georg Dietrich von Schaumberg (1678) and Henriette Marie von Schaumberg (1693). One is above the triumphal arch sgraffito , the Hl. Georg depicting the 1954 Popp Hauser artist Alfred Carl created.

The organ was manufactured by GF Steinmeyer & Co. in 1931. Three hard-cast iron bells, cast in 1920 by Schilling & Lattermann in Apolda , hang in the church tower.
