Friedrich Stammberger
Friedrich Stammberger (born May 13, 1908 in Rauenstein , † March 26, 1978 in Berlin ) was a German geologist , anti-fascist and victim of Stalinism .
Life
Stammberger had been a member of the Communist Youth Association since 1921 and a member of the KPD since 1926 . After training as a typesetter in Gotha , he worked as a layouter and journalist for various publishers and agencies related to the KPD. a. at the Internationale Arbeiter Verlag, Universum-Bücherei and from 1932 at Soyuzfoto in Berlin, where he was the representative. In 1933 he emigrated to Moscow via Amsterdam and Paris, where he continued his work for Soyuzfoto.
As a correspondent for the Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung (AIZ), published in Prague , he took part in Papanin's famous Arctic expedition in 1936 , during which people probably set foot on the geographic North Pole for the first time .
As part of the “ Great Purge ”, Stammberger was arrested in 1937 and sentenced to five years in a labor camp, which he spent in Norilsk , where he worked as a geological prospector in ore exploration. In 1946 he was forcibly resettled in Norilsk. He was first trained as a geological technician in the ore combine; From 1950 to 1954 he studied geology at the Tomsk Polytechnic University , which he completed in 1954 with a degree in engineering.
In 1954 he returned to the GDR, where he helped set up the central stock commission for raw materials and headed it from 1961. In 1957 he met Gabriele Haenisch in Berlin , the widow of the communist and victim of the Great Purge, Walter Haenisch , and married her. In 1961 he received his doctorate at the Bergakademie Freiberg and became a professor in 1966. In 1978 Stammberger died in Berlin.
After his death in 1978, his widow Gabriele donated a "Friedrich Stammberger Prize" as his legacy, which has been awarded annually since then, initially by the Society for Geological Sciences of the GDR and since reunification by the German Society for Geosciences (DGG) based in Hanover.
He received the Serge von Bubnoff Medal .
